i know that hp and compaq are the same company, so i was wondering do they use different parts in the hp vs. compaq lines. the notebooks use the same chassis and offer the same options, so i was wondering is there a difference in quality between the two companies?

I think HP is geared towards business customers and Compaq is more home user.
Thus I would imagine if there were any difference, HPs would use more reliable components and would be more severly overpriced

Kindof the opposite.
Compaq has always been the business product (in the past), and HP the consumer product (kind of). However, now they are the same, and the quality is identical.
Sort of like Ford vs Lincoln Mercury. Same exact car with different trim and different colors.
The same deal.

However, they do have stuff that is better overal quality and geared for business. If you go to the HP website, under notebooks, and click on Business notebooks, you will see their line of HP Compaq Business Notebooks. MOST of these are higher quality (they are the nc and nw series). The nx series may or may not be also identical to some consumer models other than colors and trim.

It is quite confusing.

I own an hp nc8000 and what is written on it everywhere is "hp". The model name, though, is compaq nc8000.

HP considers "compaq" not a brand, but a subsection of HP.
