XP SP2 RC2 is mostly stable for me. Occasional hang ups with IE and explorer, but I suspect that is related to another application.

Here is the main site for the SP2 Technical Preview:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/pro...p2preview.mspx

And I like using the download version better than the Windows Update .. That way if you ever had to reinstall it you don't need to download it again .. You can get the full download here:

Yes WinXP SP2 release candidate 2 is still a beta. At this point Microsoft believes it is stable enough for public consumption. When you install it microsoft states it is still in beta and it not guaranteed. RC2 is very stable but there are a few things to be concerned about.

1) It is not advised on your primary computer, but if you do back up your HDD. Even though you can remove it I have had several problems removing it to install the new version.

2) Supposively the release date for SP2 non beta version is July 28, as I was told at a Technet seminar in june, but I also heard 3rd Quarter. I would wait and see if it comes out in 3 weeks first. You have to remove the beta version first before apply the final version.

3) SP2 is in all actuallity a new operating system. It is not just an update like Win98SE was to Win98. The base code of XP is recompiled to prevent buffer overruns errors and other problems. The differences seen in the GUI, firewall, wirelless setup, etc, is very minor as to what is really be redone. This leads to the problem that some programs will not work correctly. Most things do but some programs do not like Style XP. I do not have a list of programs that do not work but I would do a search to see if any of the programs that are installed on your system might have a problem.

4) If you install a program after you install SP2RC2 you will need to unistall them before you can safely remove SP2RC2 so you can upgrade to the final version. If you dont you will probably have problems.

5) The best way to install the service pack is to slipstream it into the XP install disk and do a clean install the only problem is you might not be able to remove SP2RC2 when the final version comes out you will have to slipstream in the original XPSP1a disk that comes with your laptop.

In Conclusion SP2 Public Beta Release Candidate 2 is pretty stable has some new nice features but, if you want to load it back up you hard drive with ghost or another backup program because it can cause problems and you may end up having to reload the laptop possibly losing important data.

It's great here, and the new firewall is perfect, even though i have a firewall router, this lets me allow access to ONLY certain programs and ports, it's cool

The new wireless system is 10X better than the old one, im glad they did something about that.

My cpu seems to run at the same speed which is good.
I havent noticed any problems.
