Wireless is messed up?!?

OK after I installed my new HD and used recovery disks, my wireless G in my laptop is screwed up.
1. It tells me i'm connected at 54.0 mbps, signal strength Excellent but the internet does not work
2. Then slowly the connection goes down (ie. 36.0mbps ---> 5.5 mbps---->1.0mbps) and the whole time it says the Signal strength is excellent.
I'm not sure why its doing that, i'm sitting about 5 feet away from the wireless router.

*edit* just checked ipconfig, seems i have a 169.254.xxx.x ip at the moment, that could be the problem....and the signal is still 54mbps and degrades every 10s until it hits 1.0mbps and then goes up to 18.0mbps again.

OK I went into "Network Connections"
I have 2 headings. "LAN or High Speed Internet"
and "Network Bridges"
My Under the LAN i have one icon which is the Broadcom NetXtreme Gigabit Ethernet
and under network bridges I have the following icons: 1394 Net Adapter which is enabled and "Bridged"
MAC Bridge Miniport (never seen this before) "bridged"
and WLAN 802.11g mini-PCI Module which is also "Bridged"

I've never seen this network bridge heading before...

What wireless adapter are you using? If you are using the intel 2200 make sure you get the newest driver. I had similar problems before updating.

I dont have the link anymore, but you can search for it. It was a link to HP's site. Perhaps someone else still has it?

It would appear you have used the Networking Wizard which has installed and enabled the Brigdes and so on. You can and should get rid of them except the Broadcom. That's all you need.

I believe the decreasing connection speed is the connection looking for a speed at which it will get a good enough signal. I know it says excellent, but that's just the radio strength, not the quality of the data. It starts out at the highest available and keeps trying lower and lower speeds looking for good data. But since whatever connection is being used isn't working, its keeps going down to 0 and then starts over.

Disable, and if you like, delete, all the connections other than the BroadCOM (assuming you have a BroadCOM NIC in your machine). Then get that connection up and running.
