Spookymonster's Hypersonic AX7 thread

By this time next week, my Hypersonic AX7 should be on its way to my front doorstep. Well, in theory at least - HS might have other plans for me . So, as we head into the last week of waiting, I figured I'd start a thread to document my experiences with the company; past, present, and future.

Sales Department
Since placing my order on 6/11, I have contacted them 2 additional times. All 3 times, I have spoken to a different sales rep. Frankly, the quality of their sales department seems to vary greatly. The first rep I spoke with, Michael Kohen, was very knowledgable about the product. He was able to answer my questions regarding HS's pre-production testing of the AX7, as well as provide details on their assembly and shipping processes. After placing my order with Michael, I felt assured that I'd made the right choice in resellers.

Unfortunately, the next 2 reps I spoke with didn't seem quite so forthcoming with information. On 6/24, I contacted HS again to see the status of my order. The rep I spoke with this time told me that no work had been performed on the order yet, but that it was "still on schedule". With little more than 2 weeks to go, I had assumed that the unit would be in the painting process at least, as this can easily take the better part of a week. When I asked if all the components had arrived and were ready for assembly, he merely reiterated that they were "still on schedule". In my book, anything other than a 'yes' is a 'no', so this didn't exactly give me any warm fuzzies.

The most recent rep I spoke to was even less helpful. When I called on 7/1 to ask the status of my order, I was greeted by a recorded message. Well, no, not actually, but she may just as well have been a recording for all the information I got out of her:

Was it painted yet?
"Still on schedule"
Are you waiting for any parts?
"Still on schedule"
Your company has a reputation for letting shipping dates slide and not informing customers until after the date has come and gone. If there are delays, will I be notified?
"Hold on a sec..." Placed on hold for 30 seconds, "...Still on schedule"

Just about the only thing I got out of her was that HS has apparently "just started using a new painting process, and it takes longer for each coat to dry". If there is going to be a delay anywhere in the process, it'll be there. Gee, I feel so much better now.

In their defense, I must point out that Hypersonic does not have a phase program like Alienware or VooDoo; your order is either accepted, being built, or shipped - that's it. So maybe I was trying to micromanage the situation a little too much.

As of 12:00 EST today, my order is still scheduled for 7/12. However, given that most other resellers offering the D470K chassis (upon which the AX7 is based) won't begin shipping units until 7/15 or later, I find this date highly suspect. Assuming they get their units at the same time as other resellers, tag on 10 days for paint, another 5 for testing, and I figure my final DOS will actually fall somewhere between 7/27-7/31.

But maybe I'm just being pessimistic. Only time will tell.

I've noticed a lot of back-and-forth on AW's phase program, which drives a lot of customers crazy. But I think it's still better than no phase program.

I think a month is way too long for a notebook order, even with a week of painting. The assembly should be 3-5 days at most, testing another 2 days, paint 1 week, I guess maybe 3 weeks is reasonable.

It's too bad AW and the like have pushed people's expectations out so far as to expect their computer to take a month to get to them.

I see they did build/test first, then paint? does that seem right? I would paint the chassis before I assembled it, wouldn't you? What does 'accepted' mean? Did you get any clear answers on the process?

A month delay on your notebook means they pay that much less for parts, too. Pretty good deal for them, I guess, if they wait to order hard drive/cpu/memory.

But this isn't a rant thread. Let us know how it goes, and how you like the laptop. I do love the paint jobs they have.

Unfortunately, it's hard to do a 72-hour burn-in test in only 2 days, even if everything goes right the first time .

They do paint it before they assemble or test the unit. Don't know where you got that from.

Hypersonic's order-taking system is somewhat screwed up. For some reason, new orders seem to go straight into the "Built/Testing" phase after being placed. Given that they still hadn't done anything to the system as of 6/24, I find this to be misleading.

Presumably, "Accepted" means your credit card has cleared/downpayment has been received. Since they obviously won't begin work on a order without establishing the customer's ability to pay for it, it is a misrepresentation for them to place the order in "Built/Testing" first.

Or it could mean that it takes them that long to get the parts in from overseas. I doubt they wait too long before placing orders. A bad turn of events (natural disasters, SARS, terrorist attacks, etc.) could result in prices going up instead of down. History has shown that one good earthquake in Taiwan will cause component prices to shoot up, even if there is little or no materiel damage.

Just spoke with Michael again. Assembly has started on my AX7. The case is actually identical to the older Aviator ZX7 model (not surprising since it was based on the Clevo D470W chassis), so they're using stock ZX7 cases for assembly. The biggest difference is that the MR9700 in the AX7 supports DVI out; the ZX7 didn't. So, HS had to swap back panels to add the port to the new chassis. The back panels apparently just came in, so they'll need to be painted to match the system as well (possibly delaying delivery). So, it's confirmed: the AX7 does have a DVI port.

Secondly, Michael informed me that because my order was initially delayed 2 weeks, I'll be receiving an MS Intellimouse, painted to match my system, free of charge. Personally, I use trackballs, but who could pass up an offer like that ?

Lastly, he said he'd call me back either tomorrow or Monday to confirm the final shipping date, still on schedule for Monday. Frankly, I'm just happy to hear that all the parts are in and it's being worked on! Delivery time isn't so critical to me. I waited 4 months for the system to come on the market; another 2 weeks won't kill me. Still, I know this can be an important element in some people's decision-making process.

thanks for the clear up, i was going on assumptions, wanted to know if you knew the facts.
I assumed since it went to build/test first, then later paint, that they were building and testing before paint. Like you said, just misleading.
Didn't know they did a 72-hour burn in, sounds like a good policy though. A lot fewer problems when arriving at your doorstep. Like DOA.

I'm just one of those that, once they decide, need instant gratification, and waiting a month would drive me nuts.

Sounds like a monster machine, hope to see some pics when it gets there. DVI port is a great addition. I'll buy that mouse off you if you don't want it

I haven't heard from Michael, so I called HS myself.

Long story short: it's not shipping today.

"We found a glitch in the first shipment of AX7s. We just got another shipment and we've been working through the weekend to get them ready. I can't give you a new shipping date... maybe later this week?"

Ugh.

I asked that they contact me if they don't expect to ship this week - something they should have done once they knew my unit wasn't going to ship today. She said she would be in touch by the end of the week, which pretty much tells me that I'm not getting it until next week, at the earliest. I told them that I didn't think the "wait until the customer notices it didn't ship" attitude was very professional, and I'll be contacting Michael by e-mail.

<Sigh...> I really hope this is worth the aggravation...

I actually just got shpping confirmation email!!!! They had offered me the DVI upgrade but I wanted it here already, so I said go ahead with the non-DVI motherboard and SHIP THE DAMN THING. i've had my order in since early June. This time I went with the Viridian Green for a change of pace. HS was nice enough to upgrade my shipping to overnight (as they did the last time I ordered). I will try to post a detailed review.

By the way, where is a good site where I can save some pictures on the cheap?

BTW, I have my AX6 up for sale.

Oh, sure.... rub it in, why don'tcha ...

Spygirl, I placed my order within 2 hours of the AX7 becoming available on their website on June 11. Did you place your order on the 11th as well, or were you able to pre-order somehow?

Either way, thanks for the encouragement. With any luck, I might just get the same notification today!

Actually I placed an order over the phone on the 8th (before it was up). But I don't think they started build process for about another week. They initially charged my card $500 and then charged the rest in late June. I was going to wait another couply of days for the DVI version, but I got a call from my sales person yesterday stating that there were some issues with the DVI version. So I saif F it, give me the regular mobo... I want it now!!! In all fairness, they had told me a few times that they cannot promise a firm due date.... but a girl can wait for only so long.

I wonder if this is the glitch they mentioned to me on the phone as well? Damn - they didn't even give me the option of going with a non-DVI system.

Just spoke with Meghan @ Hypersonic. We've been playing phone tag ever since yesterday afternoon. She gave me the same choice as Spygirl - I could wait for the bugs to be worked out of the DVI port (no ETA), or I could get a non-DVI system ASAP. I chose the DVI-less system, but I suggested that if they were to offer an upgrade in the future, I'd definitely take them up on it.

Then came the shocker. Meghan said they'd been assembling and testing a system for me on the off chance that I would agree to a non-DVI system. In fact, the testing should be completed by 4 or 5 o'clock today (EST). Barring any unforseen difficulties, the unit should be ready to ship today. Given that I'm in northern NJ (about an hour away from their offices in Great Neck, NY)...

...they're going to courier my notebook to me tonight!!!

With any luck, I'll be cracking open the crate on my new system (a.k.a., AirJesus) tonight around 8:30! Failing that, Meghan said the system would be ready monday, and she'd still send it out courier. However, I'm trying to stay positive on this .
