External USB CD-RW Drive not working

Thread Starter
Hi all.

I have a Sager 8790 and have just bought a Freecom FX-1 External USB CD-RW Drive. The USB Legacy and USB 29 Device(s) (1,2 and 3) are both set to 'Enabled' and the Boot Devices set to 'Removable Devices' (1st), CD ROM Drive (2nd), Hard Drive (3rd).. but powering up the 8790 (with an MS-DOS bootable CD in the External USB Drive) the USB CD-RW Drive is not even seen nor does it attempt to boot from the External USB CD-RW Drive but within Windows it is fully functional.

A significant percentage of notebooks can't boot from an external USB device. The computer has to have BIOS level support for USB boot devices and I'm pretty sure the Sager 8790 doesn't allow for such functionality. I could be wrong though because I don't own one and haven't seen the BIOS or attempted to boot off a USB device..maybe somebody else can comment...

The only USB device that the 8790 can boot from is a USB Floppy Drive. Not all the USB floppy drives will work from posts made. It's better to buy the USB Floppy from PC Torque, Sager or the Reseller you bought it from.

Not sure about booting from a USB drive. Don't you have an internal one to boot from? I know with my external drive, it's not recognised until after XP loads. So I'd guess Element is right.

And btw, you should delete the duplicate thread you started.

The 8790 does not have a built-in floppy. A USB floppy is needed to add the RAID drivers unless a bootable CD is used. I also remember reading that some USB Floppy Drives are not compatitable with the 8790. I think WinXP needs to have the drivers built into the OS for the floppy to work on boot.

I meant a built in CD/DVD drive.

I thought a DVD/CD reader was standard with the 8790. Why the need for the external device boot?

Also thought that the 8790 would boot from the 7-in-1 devices in addition to the floppy; however, it may look at these as internals. Say this because some people originally installed windows there.
