Acer Travelmate 8005

I've seen a lot of thread saying how tm8000s eries only comes w/ 4200 rpm HDD
but when i check my HDD in the device manager today
i get this model num of the HDD MK8026GAX which is a 80 gig 5400 rpm HDD
so do they just randomly put in different HDD in different lappy?

The TM8006LMi in front of me has 80GB 4200RPM (MK8025GAS) . Sourced in Europe (UK).
Maybe the spec differs by region or maybe you were lucky and Acer could only get the faster drive from Toshiba due to stock/manufacturing issues.

We can always swap drives if it's too fast for you - I can put up with the extra speed .

From where did you guys purchase your Acers?
Doesn't seem like you can buy them off the site, so just curious if you found a reliable place.

In the USA PCTorque (the guys who host this forum) can supply you with Acers. They do a 'no dead pixel' guarantee on Acers too.
The one I saw was bought in the UK but I can't say who from (it's not mine).
I think chunlau86 bought his somewhere in Hong Kong, which could explain the 5400 RPM drive (Acer's HK site quotes a 5400 RPM drive for the TM8000's in that region).

yea i bought it in HK
and the engineer in HK acer also claim that the M11 is 8x agp and not 4x
i wonder if thats true too
but no idea how to vertify that

my laptop also comes w/ 2 batteries... does all the 8000 series come w/ 2 batteries?

chunlau86: You should be able to verift what mode the graphics chip is working in by going into the ATI control panel (in windows display settings). Dig around in there, and you should find a tab that has a button that you click to bring up the chip info. It should tell you the supported agp modes and the current mode.

On my 2012WLMi, it says 8x is supported by the chip, but it is running in agp 4x mode.

How come its running on 4x and not 8x?

I think it's either to do with the compal implementation of the chip, or it's to do with the supported speed of the intel gme chipset

What does yours say?

As far as I am aware there is no Laptop dedicated motherboard chipset that supports 8x AGP.

Although the radeon cards do support 8x - I am not sure but perhaps the sager "Heavyweights" do support 8x.

Intel Chipsets upto and including the 855GME do not.

Hmm...very strange, I just went to double check, but it seems the Omega drivers have changed the info box a little bit from the stock drivers.

The omega driver info box says something along the lines of "bus speeds 1x, 2x, 4x", "current speed 4x"

I'm about 70% sure that the stock drivers mentioned 8x agp being supported by the chip, there's a 30% chance I'm wrong though! :-p
