Just spoke to someone at PCTorque.com

Hey everyone, just called PCTorque as I had a question regarding the 17" display that will be available on the 4750. I wanted to know if it was going to be like the glossy bright new X-Brite type screens. I was told it wouldnt, but it would have an anti-glare coating on it. Not sure exactly what that means, maybe someone in the forums can describe further.

Also I asked about when I would be able to order a 4750, and he said that it would be imminent, within the next few days. When I hear few days, then I think a couple of days, like 2 or 3. However, he may have been referring to the July 15th date that has been posted. So take the news with a grain of salt.

Can anybody describe the quality of the Sager 17" WSXGA+ Anti-Glare screen in comparison to that of the brightness/contrast and quality of the Sony X-Brite style? Is there another reseller of the 4750 model that has the better 17" display, or are they all using the same screen manufacturer/process?

Any and all help is appreciated!
Thanks!

What about the harddisks, is the extra cost for a larger 7200rpm hdd is worth it? Does it really effect performance?
7200rpm is worth it otherguy. A faster HD makes loading, saving, and overall performance faster. Basically anything that has to do with transfering data is affected by HD speed.

unless you're on a tight budget, get the 60G 7200rpm.

The wsxga screen is i think the same used on the sager 8790. So far everyone seems to like it.

regarding the dvi port, you can get a pmcia to dvi adapter.

On DVI port

Suppose I do not get the DVI ports from any resller. If I purchase separately a DVI(Female)-2-VGA(Male) adapter and fix it onto the VGA port, will that be similar to getting a laptop with a DVI port? There are at least 2 types of DVI ports : DVI-A and DVI-D; D for digital, A for analog. DVI-2-VGA adapter works for the former. What kind of DVI port is there on 8790? Can anybody clarify?

I am confused about another points. Hypersonic says AX7 has got 3 USB 2.0 ports, wheeras both powernotebooks and xtremenotebooks say there are 2 such ports. Who is correct? Xtremenotebooks goes one step further and says that 4764 has 6-in-1 card reader though the configurator says it's 3-in-1. Maybe a typo?

I would like to have a 4750 and waiting for PCT's announcement.

UPDATE: Ron from powernotebooks just confirmed from Sager that 4750 has a VGA port and they can't change it since it is integrated to the motherboard.

Waiting for an announcement, you could check our site... They have been up for a while . That was a last Minute change, the 4750 has a 4-in-1 card reader. Last we were told the 4750 will have 3 USB 2.0 ports. Ron is correct there is no option to change the VGA to a DVI output on the board.

Oh boy! I didn't refresh PCT's page for a while! Thanks Luke!

on the picture of the powernotebook.com site. there only appears to be 2 usb ports. i know the 15th is when you get them in luke, but the other store mentioned you can already order it. Although i'm sure it won't arrive till after the 15th.

Jaydeep,
I'm not sure a VGA-to-DVI adapter will work. Even if it did, the whole point of having a DVI port would still be lost. The idea behind the DVI interface is to provide a cleaner, more accurate video signal to the monitor. Once it goes through a VGA port, the damage is done and there's no way to undo it. That's not to say that it's going to look crappy; it just won't look as good as it could have looked. But then again, unless you're a real video snob, you might not even be able to tell the difference.

As for Powernotebooks not being able to upgrade it, I'm not buying it. Maybe the case they're using is different than what Hypersonic is using, but the motherboard is identical. If it's got an MR9700, then it's also got a DV connector on the MB.

If they're not going to retrofit the case, then I guess there's not much you can do about it. If it's going to be a showstopper for you, I'd suggest shopping elsewhere. Otherwise, chalk it up to "you get what you pay for" .

Again you can get a pcmcia adapter which has a dvi port on it. And i think that would create a digital signal rather than just adapt a analog to digital signal using an adapter.

PCT is listing the 4750 as coming with dual-channel ram... is this a typo...?

Whoopee! 4750 ready to order! Now just to wait for it to ship ...

The thing about the ODM changing the specs of a laptop, is that all of the resellers get the same laptops. Even Hypersonic is listing a VGA out for the AX7:
1 x External CRT Monitor (DB15)

I doubt that changing a VGA port to a DVI port is as simple as you think.

Are you getting what you pay for?

more questions

what's the PCT dead-pixel policy for Sagers... I know they have a kick-a$$ policy for Acers

I think i am either going to buy from xtremenotebooks or pctorque. xtremenotebooks gives you the phillips warranty i think, and a free backpack which looks pretty sweet for being a student. pctorque however is closer to where i live, my aunt lives near there, and has a slightly better price. plus the targus deluxe backpack which has gotten good reviews. what to do.
