8600 spill accident

Thread Starter
Well...I knew it would happen, and it did. Milk was spilled on my laptop. I didn't notice any damage at first, and then it started...the backspace key and the right shift key do not work. I called dell and simply complained about the keys not working...leaving out the spill info. They said that my warranty doesn't cover spills and that if it is a spill the workers will know when they lift off the keyboard. So here's my dillema.
1. I could try and fix it myself. The only problem is that I don't know if removing the keyboard will void my warranty. Can any one answer this question? Also...I'm not sure how to remove the keyboard. Any links to instructions?
2. I send it in and risk them not finding out about the spill.
3. I tell them and pay for the damage. Does anyone know how much the repair would cost? I really don't want to spend more money on this thing.
Thankyou for any replys!

how do I "pop" the keyboard
I thnk u can pop it out first by popin the blue strip of plastic that has "Inspiron 8600" on it by using a flat head screw driver (use the little gap to the left of the writing).. do it carefully so u don't scratch the plastic...

Read the "making the keyboard more stable" (forgot exact name) sticky by Spiike. It'll tell you how to make some adjustments inside the machine -- leave those out but you could clean out the keyboard area with the same set of instructions.

The keyboard does not cost much and is easy to replace .. costs less than the service labor fee sometimes charged if Dell catches that it was caused by a spill ..

Spills are normally easy to detect when technicians take the computer apart even if you try cleaning it .. Its hard to get rid of all the residue .. Even more so with coffee or soda ..

I cleaned it at 130 last night. Like you said...the residue was tough to get off. I think I did a pretty nice job, but I'm pretty sure that they'll catch me. Oh well...money is not that big of an issue...just as long as it gets back quickly...
Thanks for everyone's comments!

Dont be worried, just tell dell that you are having wierd problems with your computer (without telling them about the spill) and convince them to let you send it in. They should do a full repair on your laptop.

Honesty?

guys,
I don't know, but what happened to honesty? Jeeze. Do some research and replace the keyboard yourself or own up to the mistake and pay Dell to fix it.

It's not just residue left from the spill that is a dead give away of liquid damage. If you hit any of the boards, there will surely be oxidation on them, which is what will put you at their mercy. If it is only the keyboard then I say buy a new one, put it in yourself, and consider it a break that you didn't do anymore damage.

eh, i dont have a problem with screwin a big corporation like Dell.

deny deny deny! ....as a last resort "Maybe someone else spilled something on it?"

Keep in mind, when it comes to "screwing a big company like Dell" is that they pass the screwings (is that a word?) on to the rest of their customers. Prices will just go up to compensate.

Yeh kind of like the $1,000 price increases on new cars for "Frivolous lawsuits".
