What do you think of these? Twinhead Centrino - Page 2

i dunno, i'd still wait to see how the kb travel / response and build quality is from someone that's seen it in person before passing judgement. pictures can be deceiving (i.e., sony vaio s)

This review is for the N15RN (with Pentium 4), (different model, but same series) Twinhead, but it might be of some interest.
Like Consumer Reports, of course, you have to take any PC Magazine review with a "grain of salt".

However:
"The best aspect of this notebook is that you can drop it and it will still work. Unfortunately, most everything else is unimpressive."

I don't know anything about euclid, and I haven't heard directly from twinhead yet, but sam's club (even if you have to join) beats euclid's prices for what appears to be the same specs.

Next, we poured a glass of water over the keyboard area, then drained it, but some of the water managed to creep into the hard drive and cause a boot-up failure. Eventually we were able to solve the problem by drying the hard drive with a paper towel. We thought the problem would stop there, but the keyboard did not respond after several reboots and a battery removal. We tried again three days later, but the keyboard was still dead.

sounds pretty useless to me

Yeah, I am sorry to "rain on the parade" but it really doesn't appear to be tremendous. Probably Sam's/Walmart got hold of a boatload/warehouse full of unsold Banias 1.5 versions of it. Having heard of Sam's/Walmart's "tactics", they got them REAL CHEAP for sure.

why does it matter if sam's club got them cheap ...they stay in business somehow.

Well, im sure the screen is going to be about the same as any other 15" sxga+. I think we can also assume the hdd is 4200-5400rpm. Its a pretty good price still, and the substandard parts are pretty easily upgradeable. I think i would probably pay that just for the looks and metal chassis.

Good luck with dealer status HiOctane, get me a good price and ill be your first customer =)

the laptop on sams is a r15b, is doesnt have 802.11g like the n15rb

i think sams may have the model numebr wrong, but either way its still nice, i check around atl to see if anyone has these on display
post #30 of 86
That makes sense.
They are probably a fine deal.

I personally would just be afraid of the PC Magazine "bombing" of them that they did, and the SXGA+ 15" screen.

PC Magazine lol....You have to understand that once a review company gets so big, they pretty much get paid or convinced by big name manufacturers to give their products good reviews...maybe one or two bad ones in there to maintain credibility, but I wouldn't trust anything PC Magazine says lol.

Are you quite certain that it is a metal chassis???

I read:
"Aluminum-Magnesium Alloy Top and Bottom"
Does that mean metal, or does that mean aluminum and magnesium particles imbedded in plastic???

Either way, it should be strong, just not 100 percent sure that it is metal.

can you find out if it is available in black like on the samsclub picture...

thanks
aluminum and magnesium embedded in plastic? Where did that come from? Alloy means metal i'm pretty sure (mix of metals)
yeah no kidding...probably costs more to do than just providing metal in the first place.
I have no idea how it is accomplished, but I know that other companies use certain "space-age" plastics.
such as the "magnesium" shells that IBM uses (or whatever the hell metal particles they use), and that HP uses in their business models which do primarily have plastic in them also (or don't they???)
I am quite sure that you are right - these ARE metal...
I just wanted clarification.

I think PC mags review was more on the performance, the specs of the machine they reviewed are pretty abysmal.

You don't think that killing it with a glass of water was substantial??

Ohh you are right on that, but i would hate to see what would happen if you did that to any other laptop on the market. I dont plan on spilling drinks anyway, thats alcohol abuse =)
