3.5 External Harddrive > games?

Do any of you have an 3.5 external harddrive you store games on and play? I'm starting to have so many games my HDD is almost full, but I do have a 7200rpm 60gig hard drive from my desktop I'd like to use to store most of my games. Is it just as fast as a regular harddrive?

It should be if you are on USB 2.0 or Firewire.

Most excellent, thank you

Amir, I'm in a similar situation. My primary hard drive is getting full with games etc and I've ripped my whole CD collection to mp3s (24 gig @ 256kbps ) which I'd like to have with me when it's not possible to have my external drive. So I bought a 5400rpm hard drive, which went bad and I had to RMA. But my question is, when I get it back, will I notice a huge difference if I install games on the 5400rpm rather than the 7200?

Pyro, the difference between 5400 and 7200 is pretty small, so it should be fine. I'll be ordering my HDD case today, so let me know how well it works when you get it

Ok, will do. That's what I figured, and probably even talked about it a bit in the forums. Most games are played mostly in RAM anyway, right?

Holy cow! That's crazy! All this time I've been using USB2 because it was supposed to be 'faster'. My external drives (both the HDD and DVD-RW) use either FW or USB2. Guess I'll be sticking with firewire from now on, unless I have to use my DV camcorder at the same time. Thanks Amir!

i had same problem when i got my external drive. Connected via usb 2 my external 7200rpm is slower than my internal 5400rpm. I just got a 2nd internal 5400rpm and raid0'ed them together. Its a lot faster now.

I say go firewire

I would be happy to see this.

One other note about FW over USB: I've found that USB enclosed external disks sometimes are not readable by Ghost (if you use external drives that way). So far FW enclosers do not have that same problem.

It was a rather annoying find, as I had a rather beautiful brickless enclosure (5.25" bay) that was USB only. Unfortunately no-go with Ghost. Bugger. I may place my DVD writer in it eventually to make it mobile on the 8890.

I think I might have to buy that enclosure, take take out the 120gb hdd out of my desktop and slide that puppy right on in there......

only problem is, UG! another power brick.....

I just got a new Lacie D2 Tripple Interface 250GB External HDD. I use it with my new Firewire 800 card. It's much faster than my 7200rpm internal HDD.
If you are running WindowsXP, don't forget to set External HDD to "Optimized for Performance", becasue it set to "Optimized for quick remove" as a default.

The Lacie external drives are quite impressive (the Terabyte block). I had a long look around to find a fitting external casing for my spare HDD's (7200 RPM's). I finally took the ICY BOX IB-355 because it fits perfectly to my case, despite it's lack of a firewire connecton. Although I use it only as storage device, I'm very impressed with the transfer rate.

I am about to buy this one:
http://www.flash-memory-store.com/40hiusbmohad.html

I am wondering about the speed also, I dont wanna get a Firewire drive because I have heard the 5680 does not have powered Firewire ports(Dumb idea), unless Myrkat could hook me up with one of those PS/2 powertaps .

So this would be fine for installing games/playing games(Planetside, BF1942, UT2004, etc)? Would the speed be significantly slower? This external drive is also small in physical size and self powered, a big plus for me. I also dont want to get a drive for my modular bay, as I use the second battery there that I need to keep there.

This is the only thing thats bugging me about my laptop performance wise, storage space. So I might go ahead and order this monday, it looks fine for games and stuff?

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO OOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!

i just bought myself an external USB2 enclosure for my 7200 RPM 8mb cache 120GB. i was considering going with the usb2/firewire version, but thought that usb2 was faster, and because most computers i encounter have usb as opposed to firewire, why not just save the extra $8?

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
