Compal CL56's BIOS v1.20 was uploaded on ChemUSA's website today (7/7/04).

I have been running with BIOS version 2.1A for a week now. It is listed on Compal's website under CL51. They must use the same BIOS. I can tell no difference. It says it adds microcode for Dothans for additional speedsteps, but I have not been able to see other speeds except 600MHz on battery and 1.7GHz on AC.

I want to know about ATI Powerplay. Anyone know how to get it? It is not included with the Omega drivers.

Been a few threads on the CL 56 and Powerplay. See this one:

Official reply from compal: CL56 Doesnt support PowerPlay
Even without the tab, people have said that their battery life is high enough that they think it's working anyway.
its not, but that doesnt take a signif amount of batt life away...

there was a review site that measured the diff of power play on and off and it was like 7 minutes of having it on, compared to one that did not have powerplay

i know its not coz the clock/mem doesnt scale down to 100/100 like powerplay laptops... and when i run my benchmarks/games on battery, its the same as if i were on ac power..
yeah well that's a good thing Who the hell needs clockspeeds scaling down.
indeed and even with it on its like an extra 7 mins

wow wee!
someone hardcore could fit in a quickie war3 game in 7 minutes!!!
but again... if ur that hardcore... u probably got 5 backup batteries in the backpack or the lappy's connected to ac

wait a month and i'll tell u the actual difference, as powerplay is supposed to work on the m6bne... but ya... difference probably not too much to be useful
post #16 of 21
I did the math, they showed a 13.2% increase, for their notebook that meant 9 minutes, for the CL56, that would mean probably 30 minutes more runtime.

Keep in mind that lower clockspeeds are a GOOD THING, since they only kick in when it's not needed. YOu don't need 450mhz of pixel pushing power for a web browser!

i don't think it's a linear relationship in terms of the power saving features...you can't take the specs for one laptop and linearly apply them to another one.
hm... 30 minutes is good... anyone who has a 9700 w/ P-M can confirm?

I'm sure you can't. But whatever it is, it's significant. 10 minutes of more battery power for free, I don't see why they don't leave an option to enable that.

it's not exactly free per se...I'm sure if this was a huge issue that many users complained to compal about they would provide a fix...
