Very cool ultra thin & light until...

A friend who knows of my interest in a good thin & light notebook just showed me her new baby. It's got a PM 1.3, 640MB, 30 GB hard drive, 4 hour battery, Intel wireless, very clean 12.1" screen, is less than an inch thick, and weighs only about 2.5 pounds!! It comes with an external DVD-RW drive, too. I was in awe of this thing of beauty and thought that my quest for notebook nirvana had FINALLY reached its ultimate destiny.

And then...

I closed the lid...

I saw it...

glaring back at me...

it was there...

dark and foreboding...

I swear I heard the gods laughing cruelly...

What did I see that could evoke such horrific irony?

Only one word could send the coldest of ice shards through my soul...

Yes, gentle reader...

That single word was non other than...

DELL

The horror, the horror...

Oh how I wish I were kidding. It's a Dell Latitude X300.

I'm still trying to control the sobbing...

my girl has an x200, i dont see anything wrong with it. i used to own a dell inspiron 8000 and it worked perfectly.

if you find dell so disgusting, replace the emblem.

the X300 is totally nice. high quality metal build too.

I was on the edge of my seat...until I got to Dell. I reeled back in disgust. I could sense your horror right through my screen. .

Seriously though, the X300 is a nice little machine. The 300m on the other hand. Bleh, my bro-in-law has one. Feels like it's made by Fisher Price.

Ah, Kev...if there's anyone here who understands my instinctive revulsion to Dell, 'tis thee, my friend!

Well, to extend and deepen my plight, I was granted custody of the accursed little beast through the weekend while the owner heads for a weekend of debauchery in Boca Raton. I'm typing on it now. Yes, it's quite a tasty machine ; so quick, so slim, so light, so seductive...

so DELL!!!!!!!!!!!

This little X300 is already burrowing itself into my heart with its wonderfulness. I feel like Michael Corleone in Godfather 3. When it comes to Dell notebooks, every time I think I'm out, they pull me back in!!

I'm still looking to Ender's forthcoming review of his Fujitsu S6210 before I decide on anything.

dell has the capability to make great systems, can't dispute that.

unfortunately they don't offer the hardware we need at competitive prices, or ideal build configs =/

Well, after two days with my friend's Dell X300, I must say that I'm impressed. But, there are two problems that'll prevent me from buying one. The battery life is poor (1-2 hours) unless you opt for the additional battery pack. And, the lack of an internal optical drive was a hassle. I rapidly grew tired of lugging around the external DVD/RW drive. It kinda defeated the purpose of a mobile PC. So, my sights remain set on the Fujitsu S6210. Ender oughtta get his by the end of the week and his review will be attentively read by me.

I think the X300 is a rebadged Samsung. I don't think Dell had much to do with the design, so you can think of it as a Samsung if it makes you feel better.

I've got MAJOR reasons to despise Dell!!

Lookin' forward to your comments on your new S6210. Just a few more days!!

Unless I am quite mistaken it is plastic. Grey, silvery plastic, looks like metal. Correct me if I am wrong.

It's not metallic in any way. It kinda feels like the Dell M60.
