Worth it?
No, and if it drops later you can always upgrade. It's too expensive for a tiny performance boost.

Agreed go with AMD whenever possible!

i personally had the money so that wasnt an issue. I have the 3.4EE and love it

i thought that AMD athalon 64s generaly had lower speeds, 3.4 ghz against 2.5ghz. would that alone make Intel more worth while?

OK maybe AMD now has 64 bit chips, but does that give you real performance boosts?

Lower speeds yes but they tend to do more work per clock cycle thus making them almost on par with anythin intel has. The 64 bit part of the chips realy has not come into its own yet but soon will and the price versus speed the AMD wins every time.

that is completly inaccurate, as they use different architecture and move data in different ways, comparing clock speeds is rarely a good idea.

the same thing applies to P4 vs Pm

narcosis what basis then do you look at when you compare the chips?

Theres differences like architecture size, l2 cache sizes, Intel's silicon squashing/stretching techniques. But its sometimes hard to really gauge the effect this has on PC (from my perspective at least), unless you want to sift through all the bench marks.

I can see the difference between a p.4ee and an Athlon 64, but the main characteristics are hard to compare as there based on different concepts.

So i end up looking at clock speed, to keep my mind happy

If you want to know wich is best just look for the raw data of bechmarks!!!

They will show exactly what chips preform better.

Best place to go for good benchmarks on system components are

i couldn't get onto tomshardwareguide kept on getting redirected. but i did find the other site extremely interesting.

i thought that the 64 bit processor would be around for a while. But next year AMD is planning to bring out 128 bit processors. Wow they don't waste time.

The rule of thumb for purchasing a computer is:

"Buy the fastest thing you can afford"

I say if you can afford the Extreme Edition, go for it. If it would have been available when I purchased my notebook I definately would have got it.

I would have to disagree on this I say if you can save alot of money by getting something just below the latest and greatest and still have a great computer and a little green left over for games!! I only have the 2.8 ghz p4 in my laptop and i get jsut about the same scores in 3d mrak and other bench marks as those with the 3.2 ghz p4. when your procecors get twards the high end the diferences are minimal you can save alot of money by back ing down a few steps. I knwo its sounds liek blastphemy but you realy get more bang for your buck that way.

Price Comparison

3.4 P4 extream $899
http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduc...116-166&depa=1

3.4 P4 $425
http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduc...116-182&depa=1

3.2 p4 $299
http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduc...116-183&depa=1

get the 3.2 not the fastest but you save $600!!!! and the benefits of 400mzh when you have 3200mhz is minimal.

AMD FX-53 $875
http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduc...103-459&depa=1

AMD FX-51 $745
http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduc...103-415&depa=1

AMD 64 3200 $282
http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduc...103-483&depa=1

Get the AMD 64 3200 and save $593

"The Athlon64 3500+ at 2.2 GHz and 512 kB L2 cache probably is the most attractive new processor. With an initial price of around $500, it is more expensive than the Pentium 4 at 3.4 GHz. In exchange, it will beat Intel's top-of-the-line model in the majority of gaming and multimedia benchmarks except for video encoding."

thats whats comming out.

oh well im starting to be converted

I still dont like my Athalon xp cpu thought, its difective i swear

You're missing the point. There are customers like me, who simply want the latest and greatest technology stuff. Even if it costs more, even if it doesn't perform better, etc. Simply for the fact that I can say you don't have it and I show it off to my friends and family.

Oh then by all means buy what you want! Its none of my business what you spend you money on. But as for most people like me want to get the best deal possible wich means balancing both price and preformance. Wich is why they would seek out our help in the first place.

So what would you choose? P 4 EE or FX-53?
