Ok peoples, heres the choices...Compal CL56, M6Ne, M6BNe, Mitac 8050?

What do you all think, which one is the overall best?
Performance wise they'll be pretty much the sum of their parts. Basically what it comes down to is price and aesthetics.

I don't care about price that much as long as its around 2000 or so plus or minus 200 or 300. In your opinion what would you get?
first question would be....what do you think of widescreen?
Personally I would get the Mitac. You get 9700 128MB, Widescreen 15.4, decent battery life, sexy design, and all for under 2K fully loaded.

If you don't care about widescreen the compal would be your best bet. although I am rather intrugued by the new twinhead lappys if I could just get more info.

Widescreen i'm a little concerned about the resolution, it looks good but I'm sure if it would be enough for me, I run 1600x1200 on a 19inch crt, also I'm not sure about distortion with games. The mitac does look nice though, good specs too.

get the one you think looks best. i'm going CL56 cause of price

Which one do you think looks best? I kind of like the looks of the Mitac and the Asus M6BNE/M6NE

cowma, i run the same res on my 19'' viewsonic. i'm not sure whether you've checked out any wxga models first hand, but for me there's just not quite enough desktop space. it's a shame cause the viewing angles are really better, but i think sxga+ is the only res i'll be comfortable working with on a 15''. head down to bestbuy and see what you think, the only 15.4'' widescreen i liked there was the zt3000 (wsxga+).

i would suggest the m6n sxga+ (64mb VRAM) or cl56 (128) if you can deal with the viewing angles.

looks wise, imo: 1) mitac 2) asus 3) compal

i couldn't honestly say, because I have never seen these in person before, which would be a good idea before I buy.

anyways. the widescreen looks nice and the regular screen looks nice too. the thing is, on snowboarding trips in my 2000 Durango, I stand up my dad's 14" Dell 600M right in front of the dash (the keyboard and screen totally vertical, so that it stands on top of the cupholder and the screen is in front of the radio) and fits nicely and can view from both angles > plugged the headphone jack into audio AUX port on stereo, and have the AC/DC converter sounds like a real movie theater.

Anyways, I'm worried that a widescreen would be too wide and come up too far into the gear lever because the 14" already is close to it. So that is one of my concerns. Also, I have been hearing the the CL56 doesn't have good viewable side angles... so that is a concern also.

I have seen other desktop replacement widescreens and they look awesome. So... I'm still undecided. Again. I am looking for price too, CL56 self-building.

I'm gonna go to best buy in a half hour or so, I'll come back and report what I think about the WXGA screens.
sounds like a good plan, im about to try and find a fry's within a hour of here, to see if i can see any ODMs first hand =)
ehhhhh WXGA pissed me off personally...wayyy too low res for my taste.

I wish Asus would release the WSXGA M6Ne in the US. Justin from proportable says they may never come to the US, but he says if they do he'll know before the end of the week, so I'll also update you all on that.

On notebookreview.com they had a review of the WSXGA M6Ne, not sure where they got it.

I had to make the same decision. WXGA was out of the question since I can't function with nearly as much productivity on anything less than 1280x1024. M6Ne edged out the CL56 with its 2nd battery option and sleek look (and it didn't hurt that it's nearly a pound lighter).

Also, the audio-out on the M6N is on the left side of the laptop, which goes perfectly with my earbuds (fitted cord with right one longer than left so you can tuck it behind you and under your arm instead of it dangling on the keyboard).

So it seems like ASUS put a little more thought into the case design than some others.

The little things add up

Yeah, I like the nice sturdy look of the Asus, and the blue buttons add a nice touch.

well. i'm about to go to Fry's also. need to get my tires changed right across the street anyway. i'll let you know how that goes. i'm going to the one on Brokaw, which isn't as nice as Fremont and Lawrence Expressway, but hopefully they have the same selection.

I agree that the Asus has some nice features and good looks but the GPU is pretty dissapointing considering the other features they have included. For me WXGA 1200x800 is quite acceptable and the Mitac is just as good looking. Again, it boils down to personal preference. They are all good machines but for a widescreen laptop with the M11 and good expandability the Mitac is really the best bet.

The GPU won't be much different.

Unless you play games. If you play current games at low resolutions/low details, you won't notice a difference. If you play with higher resolutions and details, the 128mb is needed and it will be able to play newer games longer, since the minimum VRAM needed for games goes up along with the rest of the requirements as the game-engines progress.
