I myself use Opera as well

Phoenix is nice.

Opera is a choice. Depending what you don't like about Mozilla, there's Phoenix (or whatever it's been renamed to, 'cause of the Phonex BIOS company's request).

Anyway, I like Opera, it's quick and efficient, but it is not free (well, the free version has ads). I bought versions since 4.xx (every other major version requires an upgrade-purchase). I'm on 7.xx now, and it's fine. Has the mouse gestures and tabs, etc. Plus it has a better download manager than IE (none) and Mozilla (lame). It has built-in e-mail and works with one (or more) of the chat programs, too... check them out:

Go to TOOLS -> Preferences -> Advanced -> Tabbed Browsing.

It has tabs... oh yeah. I'm using them right now! Plus, be sure to play around with the various themes (skins) and extensions (plug-ins). Go to Tools -> Preferences -> Themes and Extensions, then click on each tab and click the "Get more..." link there.

Basically, the Phonetity Light (or something named like that) is what I like... small and clean. Then here are some good extensions:
1) Nuke Image (right click an image and say "remove")
2) Popup ALT attribute (this isn't a default in phoenix, oddly enough)
3) Text Links (awesome!)
4) Mouse Gestures (tricky to get working with the right mouse button, but great!)

I am using pheonix too and the only problem I have is making the "auto fill in" thing stop. Like if I type sager into google, then go back again and type serious sam rules, once I type the s it shows "sager" in a little pop-down menu thing. Anyone have any ideas to make this stop?

Doh! I only use Phoenix at work, and I am at home now (using Mozilla 1.4) and there's a preference to turn this on/off... I don't recall if/what it is in Phoenix... plus, I am using the 4/29/03 nightly build when I do, so the preferences are different than the 0.5 build.

tabs are eluding me....i have v0.6 but do not have the tabs toggle switch in the prefs box.....

i have toolsptions:general/privacy/web feature/themes/extensions/font's&colors/connection
post #11 of 20
Ah, you have the nightly build... in that case MIDDLE-BUTTON CLICK on a link...

See if that fires up a tab in the background. I am not thrilled with the TOOLS->OPTIONS (vs. the 0.5's TOOLS->PREFERENCES) but it is an Alpha/Beta version...

Middle-clicking opens windows in tabs in the background (so you can continue reading while it's loading).

thanks for the tips on activating tabs, ctrl clicking on links is the quick way to start a new tab. this browser is perfection....

so why isnt mozilla this nice? it looks like phoenix is just a side project of sorts
post #15 of 20
I think Phoenix (Firebird) started off as a side project, but they're planning on it replacing Mozilla by around Moz 1.5 and having all the other things like email, chat, whatever as modules.
Actually, you can have advance tab function....
goto
Tools --> Options --> Extensions --> Get new Extensions
Install : Tabbrowser Extensions and Tabbrowser Preferences . Both will make your Phoenix(FireBird) works like Opera.
There are so many useful extensions to download for free... you might want to check them out.

Yeah, but it's still IE at it's core (meaning, full of security holes).

The nice thing about a NON-IE browser is they are built from the ground up, and do not have the security problems that IE has.

Ahh I dont worry about the security issues on IE anyways. Im behind two routers, and and firewalls on everycomp. Well on this comp two routers. Cause im wireless right now. I can tell you this one loads up in 1/4 the time it takes IE to start.

I like Mozilla/Phoenix/FireBird because it's much faster, smaller than IE.... and the most important thing is it's not Microsoft.
