7200 vs. 5400???

Well I've finally decided to buy the Mayhem G2 from ABS (It's kind of a pisser that they won't ship international or to the APO for the Baghdad embassy though).

Anyway, I was just searching the forum and read a thread talking about the mobile processors and how the 735 was the best value in terms of performance - thank you very much for saving me some $$ there!

So now I'm wondering about the HD. Is the 60gig 7200 really going to be a better deal than the 80gig 5400 - which is about $25 less? Of course everyone wants more space, but more than that I want good response from my programs and games. But will I see THAT much of a difference??

Also, what about heat and noise - is the 7200 a bear compared to the 5400? (I like my lappys cool and quite!)

the 80gb 5400 has higher areal density; it's slower than the 7200 rpm drive, but not by a particularly noticable amount.

I have one in my sony A170 and it definitely works fine for me (I am a power user, as well). Programs load quickly still.

I'd get the 7200 rpm drive if I had the option, but I'm definitely happy with the 5400.

well long story about my desktop, i had a dodgy guy try and fix it, anyway he unloaded a 80 gig 7200 hd on me, the sucker i was i bought it (my PC really needed a new CPU fan).

In the end I'm glad he did coz my system seems so much faster since i made it my master drive (compared to my old 5400 60 gig) and i can't hear any noise difference. But thats for a desktop.

Large programs will load up a few seconds faster, but there won't be any operating difference if you have the ram to back it up.

Great, thanks everyone for the help.

As a follow up, does anyone know if the 7200 is much louder than the 5400?

The last thing I want is the sound of a jet plane taking off when I launch a program

I am using 7200rpm harddrive right now, and I can't hear anything (not that I'm deaf) unless I put my ear onto my laptop.

haha... does ur desktop hd sound like a jet? (assuming most ppl have 7200rpm hd in their desktop)

hd's don't make much noice... unless they are crappily mounted and the vibration bumps it against where it is at

Well ... regretably it is quite loud! I think that probably has as much to do with the 3 case fans as it does my 2 hard drives...

But I suppose you're right - I'm sure I'm worried about nothing!

Well gee-wiz! I suppose I should be more commited to my pre-post searches!

well... for now... i'm going with a 80gb 5400rpm just for the extra capacity, but everywhere I've read about this issue, the suggestion's been always get the 7200rpm unless u need the extra 20gbs

Edit: meh... i see u've already made a choice

Desktop 7200RPM Drives are a LOT quieter today than they were a few years ago, due to constant improvements. Technologies like FDB (fluid dynamic bearings) made a huge difference. That said, some drives are quieter than others. There have been roundups that compared how quiet the drives were.
