I understand the graphics package on the averatec is lacking. I plan to use it mainly for programming and watch video live or some movies and music. Not much as for games.

The other machine on my list is the r3000z. which is 2 pounds heavier but has the athlon xp 64 And plan to upgrade its mem. And the r3000z comes to around 1100+ along with a 100 rebate.

no need to look for that, the compaq warranty will be better lol...the r3000 is a great chassis, good speakers/sound, if you aren't using it for gaming it'll be awesome...(actually the occasional game ran fine on mine, which was the r9000 integrated). I returned mine though because i personally hate widescreen.

looked in at both of those systems. Compaq, even with a slighty beefier pricetag is worth the money. If you like widescreen (you can always get it with a sxga though) and the 8lbs thing doesn't bother you, grab the Compaq. Don't expect the battery to compare though, the Banias will KILL the AMD64 in battery life. (not so in performance). If you can live with the 440go grab it. It is really a solid system, fast, good looking, solid built and the speakers are better than some of the desktop speakers i've seen (great for watching movies).

And although you will find plenty of people bashing the 440go. If you don't game, it will be overkill for you, unless you are doing DX9 stuff.

PS: unless compaq changed the lineup the Z (with amd64) is not available with an ATI graphics. Your choices for the Z are 64mb 440go or 32mb 420go.

The list is growing now.
I looked at the Asus Z9000 at rjtech. Pentium M 1.5 and customized it to around 1250.
Would like to get some feedback regarding z9000 and other similar models from other brands. Also the quality of service from rjtech
post #7 of 12
from what i know, asus beats HP for quality anytime of the year. and 1250 doesnt seem so bad (whats the gpu on that thing?)

if i were you i'd try smaller shops and stay away from major players (like dell, hp/compaq, gateway, emachines, ect) unless there is really osmething about them or you feel safer with a big company due to support.

If there is any means you can strech your budget, you can get a CL56 on mwave compeditively speced for $1400. It is a bit of a strech from the compaq in price, but also in performance (1.7 dothan, 512mb ram, 128mb m11 ati, 5400rpm 40gb), it just doesnt compare to the compaq (3000+, 256ram, 64mb 440go, 4200rpm hd) and if you think about it, after you buy the upgrades (ie, more ram and faster hd) the CL will actualy cost you LESS. I am not trying to be CL56 fanboy, i don't even have it, was thinking about it yesterday and figured out the Uniwill (in my sig...$1400 even) is a better choice for me.

How does the PM 1.5 compare with PM 1.7 in terms of performance ?

the price diff between 1.5 and 1.7 (735) is $85 at mwave.com for the cl 56
Since I am already streched on my budget I want to know if its worth it ?
Instead i am thinking of going for the 40gb to 60 gb upgrade for 37 bucks.

Any idea how quickly mwave can ship ?

Also the M6N at Rjtech.com compares withe cl 56 at mwave in terms of specs and price.
Is there any much diff between these two or its a push ?

Thx

m6n vs. cl56?

big difference --> 64 mb vs. 128 mb VRAM

sounds like your needs/wants are waffling a bit, since you were initially considering the averatec 5110. generally speaking, the point about those kind of laptops (averatec being the prime example) is that if you don't need the best video card they're an attractive option price-wise.
