low-power mobile Athlon 64 versus p4 HT

Hey guys,

I'm going to buy an acer 1714smi or an acer ferrari 3200.
i'll be using it mainly for entertainment(dvd), gaming, game-modding, leveldesign... (yes, I love to game)

now I don't know whether to choose the Athlon 64 2800+ from the ferrari or the P4 3.4 HT from the 1714smi. which cpu will give me the most advantage?
and will there be a big difference between both systems in gameperformance?

The big minor I hate from the 1714smi is the 7.1kg and the 7.5cm height
i'll be mainly using it with the adapter, but I must travel each week for a couple of hours before I can plug it in...
and i don't have the option for a desktop system...

Thanks for your help!

Personally I would go P4. For your reading pleasure:

The 2800+ will give you longer battery life than the P4, but the P4 3.4 outperforms the 2800+ in almost everything. I personally beleive you would be much happier with the 3.4HT

thank you for the reviewlink from anandtech, it was quit usefull, but now I'm wondering if there will be a big performance boost when windows 64-bit will arrive? (and hopefully some games like hl2 64bit coded)...

It's been speculated that 64bit could offer up to a 30% boost in performance for some applications. Here's the deal. You're traveling every week, I'd say that the acer 3200 is the obvious choice. Although you won't get as good of performance as the 1714, it will handle any game to date and many more to come.
The 1714 is a desktop that is slightly easier to carry than other desktops. For heaven sakes, everything in it is meant for desktops.

That 1714 is just freaking massive.

If you really want P4, look at the Sager 8790 or 5690.

As far as 64bit goes, who knows? It could be next year, it could be 3 years. I personally dont think its a big deal at this point, i think any current laptop will be near obsolete before 64 bit is mainstream.

A64's do have better batter life than the P4's though. Maybe wait for that new A64 based Sager.

That is also matching up the AMD 3400 and 3700 against the P4's, which is not the 2800 that he was asking about. =-)

Here's a link to Intel's info on the Pentium-4m, the mobile P4. It has hyperthreading and clocks up to 3.2ghz:
