Hi all
Gonna start this now, so I dont slack and not put it up tonight. Heres a preview pic... to whet the appetite.
That is my M6N on the left, and my W1 on the right. Actually, I sold the M6n and its getting delivered in an hour or so.
Tonight, I will edit this post, or just add to the thread, the big diffs between these two Asus laptops, and pluses and minuses of each. I also have screenshots of DVDs in action, although I didnt use a tripod to steady the cam, so its a bit hard to tell what is the laptop screen diff, and what are my own post -traumatic drummer tremors (played for 15 years)
Okay, I gotta go work to pay for the W1.
Eric
Sounds like I have some interested folks here, good.
Some background-
The Asus W1 is currently shipping in one config- it goes out of the factory with a 1.7Banias, 768 meg 333 mhzram, and a 5400rpm 80 gig drive. The Intel 2200 b/g card is also included, which I have found out is incompatible with a d-link router I need to replace- not mine, at a clients. I said it before, I will say it again. D-link sucks. But enough of that. The most notable difference in the W1 is its standard WSXGA+ screen (plus, I think. 1680 by 1050 native res) and DVD +-R/CD-RW combo drive. The DVD drive really caught my attention- at 4x burning it is certainly not the fastest out there, but its a nice option to have in a laptop if its your main system. I have heard and somewhat agree with the argument of buying a full size drive and an enclosure, since it can upgrade into a new laptop setup.
The w1 also is totally customizable, you just have to buy the standard proc and ram anyhow. It includes the radeon 9600 64m vid chip, and a standard global 2 year warranty- as long as you dont change anything out.
The M6n is available as a barebones or whitebook system. Which means you can slap a dothan in it, 7200rpm hard disk, 2 gigs of ram, whatever. You can change out the parts in the W1, but, it does void the 2 year global warranty. The m6n has a limited warranty, for that reason I suggest going to a separate builder/reseller so you get thier warranty. The M6n in th pic had all the same internal specs as the w1, except only 512 meg ram.
Right now the w1s are a bit pricier than the m6ns, but not by much, if you know where to look. Newegg has a ridiculous deal on them now. Expect the prices to keep dropping- while custom laptop houses have to build the M6ns, all they do is reship the pre-set up w1 to your door. Asus loads XP pro for them, alot less work. Hard to justify the same markup when so much less labor is involved.
Okay, theres the specs. I am going to seperate this out by subject.
More in a sec.
Eric
Edit- an error! The dvd burner is 2x burning, I think. Thats all mine does. Bear in mind an external is 8x faster (externals are 16x now) at half the cost. But the W1 config is all pre-done. Dont like it, have to get another chassis. Some places will customize, but your warranty diminishes. It doesnt die completely- just diminishes. Contact Asus for official details.
Shininess! The cases.
Now in that first pic there, I will admit, my m6n had fingerprints galore. One thing I like about the W1, is that it has a coating (I think) over the aluminum. It just doesnt pick up prints like the plastic on the m6. However, the m6 has a better touchpad, IMO. Both synaptics, but the m6's feels better, and has 2 extra middle buttons for scrolling. Me, I use the mouse most of the time, so it mattered little.
The m6n has a kind of rubbery piece surrounding the keyboard which picks up oils from your hands like crazy, as did the keys. The w1s keys are a darker black, and I like em better. Not that I like laptop keyboards at all- I have typos all day long, as you no doubt will see. But, I like the w1s better.
Ports-
Okay, there are some major pluses and minuses on the w1 here. Mind that I am one picky dude.
Pluses- the m6n has 4 usb ports, all on the left rear corener of the laptop (as if viewed while typing). The w1 only 3, one on the right, and 2 on the left in the "port bay". to explain the port bay- Most of the ports are covered over by a long plastic strip. No exposed ports unless you need them.
THe only exposed are power, mouse USB port, and the compact flash reader. Both lappys have the flash reader, I find it annoying, I dont use it. But it comes with a plastic filler piece to keep dirt from entering the chassis. It pops out halfway constantly. I might glue the damn thing shut. !
Flip down the port cover on that left side, you get, in order from back to front, monitor out, modem/lan (gigE/10/100) 1 pcmcia slot, flash slot underneath, TV out (not on my model) firewire, 2 USBs. No paralell port.
Here, the m6n wins. It has a paralell port, an output for the asus extra port attachment thingy, which adds USBs, extends parallel and monitor out... I thin k thats it. I havent a need for TV out, dont care. USBs are 2.0 of course.
I should also note the flash reader does all formats but compactflash. Guess whats in my digital camera? Sigh, oh well. Firewire port works just fine on that.
Now, onto the front. Sound ports! All 1/8th inch jack, audio in, S/PDIF, mic in, 3d headphone out. Now, here the W1 definately takes it. I never got my m6n to spdif out, I dont believe that it does- but that might have just been me not looking into it enough. Now, on my w1, I know it has spdif, I just cant figure out how to turn the #$*(#$& thing on... But, the 3d headphone thing is WAY cool. I just watched episode 2 of star wars- the special "really bad acting but cool visual effects" edition, ya know, the one that was in all the theaters- with the 3d. The w1 comes with a pair of behind the head open headphones. On the 3d mode it plays out of all speakers plus the phones, and the simulated 3d effect is the best I have ever heard. Seriously, just on regular stereo through the phones the sound on this one is good, much better than the m6n. I make no claims to have configured the m6n properly, although I havent done anything fancy to my w1 either.
Touchpad- I like m6ns better.
Buttons- both laptops have the same buttons, with the exception of 2- the m6n has the wifi radio on/off hard button on the upper middle of the lappy. The w1 has the 3d sound toggle button on the side, instead. Both have the very gay "open default internet/email client" buttons, the power4gear button, and the touchpad on off button. The wifi on off feature can be done via the function key and F2 buttons. I liked that button.
Big beef with W1- they put the IR on the front! I have a portable printer! Oh man... On the m6ns, its on the side. Best place for it. Anyone can put thier palm down wherever to do palm things. Printers are another matter. What a pain. Really, I print out my customer invoices on the road, and, this just sucks.
there is also a CIR or regular remote control IR feature on the front. I think it only works with the TV... its a TV in, that it comes with. Maybe a tuner. I have a sattelite dish, and also dont care. Check it out on the specs site, I will like em somewhere in the review.
M6n has the battery instert wierd problem, that Asus did fix. the w1 has a color matching battery- oh yes, its silver too- slides right in and locks in nice and tight via 2 tabs, not 1 like the m6. Plus, its right next to the chromed out subwoofer. You hear that holmes? My laptop has a sub. Thats right! Takin it in for purple neon undercarriage lighting next week... right after I check myself in to bellvue.
Last thing, lights n latches. The m6n has a hard latch, and several different colored LCDs. The W1 is all orange lighting baby. Why? How the heck should I know. BUT, it has the coolest closing latch ever- none. Thats right. It seals shut like your fridge after you sneak that late night ice cream, with tiny magnets. Coolest laptop "thing" I have ever seen.
Hmm, I should post some pics of the design elements, in a minute. One is that the w1 is pretty boxy, the m6 has a deceptive thinness to it due to its shelfy design. The bottom part is recessed just a touch, making the m6 look a little slimmer. A 15.4 inch notebook aint slim kids. But it looks nice- I have no interest or need for an external monitor.
Speaking of monitors, lets get to that. Heres the shelf/design pic:
Eric

I will add quickly, that yes I have glossed over the w1s coolest looking feature- the monitor hinges are at a 90 degree angle, so it hangs back and down from the unit. It is very cool. Very unique looking, and just by the feel, very durable. anyhow...
onto what youve been waiting for- LCD comparison!
LCDs.
Dun da da DUN!
Okay, now before we go too nuts here, something to consider- this is a bit apples and oranges here. The W1 has a WSXGA+ screen, res at 1680x1050. The M6 was only WXGA, at 1280 by 800. I know the M6s will eventually have the WSXGA+, and its been debated to death in the general discourse forum- its preference people. Some people like the pac man looking pixels as big as my nose, some people wanna go blind before they turn 30. I am the latter. I am also almost 30, so I better stay on top of these high res screens!
What I have done, is paused some shots from a dvd and taken digital pics with my nikon coolpix 885 3.85mp digital cam. They are not steady shots, no tripod, I am a PC techie by trade, not a photographer. If the screen looks blurry, look at the edges by the case- they might be too. Then its me.
Before the action shots, some coparative resolution shots.
Both laptops with the same windows XP leprechaun desktop shot, at full size centered and unstretched- helps to give some perspective.
So you see how much more real estate you get. Refer to the first pic I posted to see what they look like when stretched out.
Okay, enough with that. On to the action pics...
Eric
quick reply- my image host, which is just my freespace on my ISP- is geeking out. I will post the rest of my stuff, hopefully the pics will pop up soon. really, its not my fault!
Thats so han solo of me. lol
Eric
Image hosting back up! For now! (seems I needed to delete some files to free up space, hehe)
I expect this thread will get some traffic, and I have no idea what my feeble upload limit is. Any generous soul who wants to take my pics, host em somewhere, and re-post em into my thread, go for it. No copyright infringements, I promise, unless you are loaded. Then, I gotta sue!
Okay, its DVD time.
First off, the W1 came preloaded. So you wanna slam in a dvd right? It has a chortcut to the DD software on the desktop, so it should work, right?
Heck no! You silly, you gotta install the DVD software it comes with! (powerdvd, rebranded by asus as asusdvd). Thats whats playing these. I am sure there is better software, I just havent had the time to noodle with that yet.
On to pics!
From now on, only the captain is allowed to say, Argh. (the w1 sailing into port)
And, heres the m6n at 12x8, savvy?
All in all, I think the W1s WSXGA+ is a little sharper, and brighter. I know the pics have sucky contrast and I apologize, but thats my best. The w1s higher resolution I thought might be an issue for the ati 9600 to keep up with, but the screen seemed to have less motion blurriness, IE more snap to the pixel recovery time. I have yet to game hard on it. Not sure if I will, really. Business has gotten too busy. Which is good! I think...
The m6ns 12x8 screen is not bad at all either though. I have gamed on that extensively, and far cry demo, an ut2004 demos just look amazing on it. So, its a matter of choice and preference- but at least you mail orderers out there, like myself, have a little better idea of what those letters WXSGA mean now.
bits a pieces, final thoughts here in a minute.
Eric
Included stuff-
My m6n came from powernotebooks.com, who I know has a very polarized fan base out there. Either you like em, or youre agnostic and hate em. Setting belief systems aside, I think they put together a nice package, some extra softwares, I had a blanking plate just in case I wanted to save 4 ounces and remove the CDR... (what? who cares!). And a free bag. But that all came from them.
The w1 is all asus baby. And it comes with toys! And whats better than a 2500$ wallet wrenching laptop that comes with some free trinkets? Nothing. Really.
stuff!
The headphones are very cool, I dig em. Never head a behind the head pair before. the mouse is also cool, has a wheel, tiny little thing, and optical. Comes with a short cable and an extension cable, just in case... I have no idea. But you have it.
The W1 comes with games! Woot! I think. Anyhow, the one that works is Battle Engine Aquila, which is pretty fun game. The cutscenes look a little made in 1989, but I skip those. Straight to the shootin!
There is another game called gunmetal, brilliant graphics, and it looks great, fun to play, for the 10 seconds util it hangs the machine, hard. I tried it on both the w1 and m6. Hung em both. Went to the website for updates- its under development. Huh? How did I get it? Well, I guess maybe if you get a w, you might luck out and get a prerelease of half life 2, haha. If you do though, send me a copy. I am not kidding.
Okay, heres my other Asus toy. If you cant tell- I dig Asus. I am a reseller, and have the ability to get stuff drop shipped straight from Asus in Fremont, CA. I have to pay through a wholesale house who takes a cut, I aint big enough to do it any other way, but I dont care. Anyhow, heres the router.
Now, this isnt your ordinary wireless b/g router. It has a paralell port on the back so as to act as a print server! It also can create 2 networks, firewalled frmo one another, wifi and cabled lan seperated. I will use that, since my laptop is on wifi, and virus riddled client PCs and up on the cabled lan.
But wait, theres more! There is a usb port on the back. Wanna plug in a webcam to check from the net? You can! They claim this is for security, and please people, only use it for that. Dont be a perv. Also, and this is the coolest feature- you can plug in an external hard disk to the USB port, and you have an instant on the internet FTP server. THAT, is what cool is. Cheapest FTP server ever. No idea on speed. I havent tried any of that out yet.
Also, the stand on that guy is a fold away built in stand. Use it or dont, its there if you want it. Very cool. The interface has lots of options, seems well written, not well translated or proofread. You know what I mean, "select option yes to active extra super wireless G speed incredible!". Well, its not THAT bad, I dig the guys at asus. They just need a proofer, if youve flipped through a manual, you know what I mean.
Conclusions in a sec.
Eric
CONCLUSIONS!
Okay, so heres the positives on each, according to me. Your desires will and should differ from my own.
M6N-
Battery holder not as strong.
Infra red port in right place!
Better touchpad
Case not as nice, easily dirtied.
Better LEDs (more colors)
Better hard buttons.
More USB ports by 1. Has parallel port.
W1-
I like the higher res screen WAY better. You may not.
DVD burner? plus AND minus! only 4x! Do I sound like I care? I havent burned anything yet though.
Preloaded OS seems okay. I will use it, no realoading. Tired of reloading.
Sounds WAY better. Even though the M6 by no means sounds bad at all.
No parallel port or extension for the asus port thingy
Case shiny! Very cool
Monitor swing action and magnetic lock down also very cool.
On both-
THese are both very chic laptops, in design and function. Go with what you like the best. I went w1 over the m6 for the higher res screen and included dvdr drive, and financially it was a lateral move. Plus, I get one more year on the warranty. Global warranty means you can walk in to an asus repair shop anywhere on the plant, and its getting fixed while you wait. Or so thats what I hear. I hope not to need that.
You cant go wrong either way. Soon, the m6n will have the WSXGA+, and by then I believe the W1 will be shipping barebones, so it will be configureable by the resellers.
Just dont be surprised if you have a dlink wifi box and it doesnt work. Dlink is sucky. I told you I would say that again. And again...
Friends dont let friends load WinME, or plug in a D-link. Or buy compaq.
Enough of my opinionated blather. Want more pics? Just ask! I no longer posess the M6, but I did put together an Asus desktop the other day, I will post a pic of that maybe. Its a neat box.
Alright, the specs pages. Mind that you shouldnt ever listen to what anyone says on these forums per specs- check em yerself, really.

Thats it for me guys, have fun with this. If my pics die, it means my image host sucks. Host em elsewhere, send me the links, I will edit my posts and slap the new url refs in.
Eric
one last disclaimer- its late, and my spelling sucks, and I know it. So, sorry. Aint gonna go back and re proof my drivel above though.
Ferrari- the W1 is a little brighter, with a bigger sweet spot than the m6s WXGA, in my opinion. BUt the camera was focusing on the m6, I had to turn the flash off, ugh. Taking pics of light emantating objects is hard. I used to take pics of fishtanks, now thats a challenge. But, so it goes.
Also, standard purchasing disclaimer- I get lots of "whered you get it" and "can I have one". You cnat buy where I do, unless you run a PC biz with a resale license. And, no. Unless you live near Prescott, AZ, we aint doing business. I only sell to the locals, if you want online sales, try powernotebooks, or proportable, or newegg, or wherever. Justin over at proportable is a pretty good guy and knows a ton about asus stuff.
Anyhow
Either screen is pretty kickass, they are samsungs I believe. Hard to go wrong there.
Alright, 'night all

Alright, 'night all
Eric
