Review: Asus M6N and Asus W1- A comparative review. - Page 2

Hey all-

I am in Prescott AZ, about 90 minuts north o' phoenix. Performance Computing is my biz name, I am in the book. My sales are pretty much local only though, building my business up on a radius of service, so to speak, I dont do Gilbert. But hit me up if you like.

As per benchies, its pretty much the same hw as the m6n. Same chipset/vid card. I am not sure any new benches past whats been posted on the m6n would really do, since they would (should) be the dead on same.

IMO the M6BNe is a little more flexible (more usb ports)
great comparison - i think the -1 usb ports doesn't hurt the w1n, if you have more than 3 usb inputs, you'll probably have more than 4, and need a usb hub anyway.

The sleek look of the w1n alone is a selling point, with the only real downside being the video card - and the 9600 64mb isn't a bad card at all, if you've tried it. It plays most of the latest games at a good framerate. For those who immediately dismiss it because it's "only" a 64mb card, try using it before you smack it - some of us use our laptops for more than just gaming.

IMHO...

If youre into gaming, buy a desktop. At half the price you can build a screamer, really. But I played unreal 2k4 and farcry on my m6n, both ran well enough to be very playable. Some other games maxed out the frame rate, sure, but the vid card is the same in both. A 128 meg vid card only is able to load more textures guys, and doesnt have a faster clock speed.

And I agree with coffeeshark, no way I am going to sit down at home and plug 4 things in. Not when a hub costs what, 15 bucks? I also dig the w1 having one of those ports on the other side, making the mouse plugin way more convenient.

The best laptop has a mix of the features of the two, for sure. But, you gotta prioritize what you like and want.

I completely agree, i just got my m6bne, which is an extremely nice laptop, perfectly mobile, long battery life, and it can play a few games if i'm bored somewhere. On the other hand, even the heaviest laptops today have yet to match the performance of the best computer from a year ago. YOu can upgrade your desktop much more easily and you can overclock it to hell if need be. If nothign else, throw together a 600 dollars small form factor, even that will outperform any laptop.

hmm now i'm thinking of buying the asus since everyone says it look so damn nice

well, check the pics!

but they are quite sharp looking. asus puts alot fo thought into the "sexiness" as some members put it. For insance, when my w1 is in sleep mode, instead of the industry standard flashing power led, thiers does a very slow fade in and out. Say it with me kids- "ooooh" hehe.

The recessed screen and aluminum case on the w1 is really sharp, as is the non boxy form of the m6. Both very cool.

To those who already own a W1N:

Is it true that the W1N has no built-in MIC?
On the Asus-homepage they say it has, but some people have said other things.

As it is an important fact for me, I'd be very thankful for information.

I was here to promote a small business, but now my link has been removed and I'm banned!

I dont think the owners of the board- who run a small business selling laptops online- like advertising for thier competitors. Of which, I am not, I only sell locally, not online.

Built in mic- there is a mic jack... but yeah, I just tried recording without a mic plugged in and nothing happened. But dont listen to me, it took me a week to figure out my old school cambridge speakers with the 1/8 inch digital in jack wouldnt work in the laser spdif port... duh... lol

Hehe, all this new technology, hum? I am not much familiar with this spdif and dvi and so on things, too.
But for me, the decision whether to buy the w1n or not hangs on that built in mic, as it is very important to me.
It would be enough, if only one who owns the book woulkd say: der is one built in, cause if the manufacturer AND an owner say it is, then it must be so.

Anyone??

I am not sure. I dont see it on mine, I dont think its there... Hit up Justin at poportable, he knows a ton on these things.

Either that, or call Asus themselves.

hey erict, is the W1N a lot heavier than the M6N?

A little bit. I never weighed them so I dont know the exacts, but the w1 seems to be a touch heavier.

The IR port being on the front and not the side may be a deal breaker for me... I may sell this and go back to m6n, but only if I can get the wsxga, dvd-r. Then again, this laptop is the sexiest looking tech thingy I have ever laid eyes on. I may have to break down and buy the bluetooth adapter for my canon i80, and a bluetooth card for the lappy. I want one that doesnt protrude, although... I found a toshiba bluetooth card that fits in the sd slot... I am considering it.

130$ approx just to get my printer working again aint my idea of a good time, but then I could get a bluetooth gps reciever and sw for that and have a pretty cool gps unit.

Hey EricT, thanks for your marvellous comparative review of the two hottest Asus notebooks. You certainly have us drooling now for the W1N.

I am seriously thinking of getting the Asus router that you showed us, but I noticed from the spec sheet for the product on Asus's home web page that the router has only one single USB port, although it claims that the port is good for a webcam, disk drive and printer. Well, I would like to connect both of my external USB hard disk drive (Maxtor) and my USB printer (Canon) to the router -- so my question is: can I then just plug in a standard 4-port USB hub to the one USB port on the Asus router in order to expand the number of USB ports available to me? Will the Asus router automatically recognize the "expanded USB ports" and assign IPs to each of the additional USB ports accordingly?

Thanks again, dude.

Ah- on the router.

Out of the box, it was buggy as hell. Updated the firmware, and the thing has been a rock. Now, there is only one USB port. It goes like this- webcam, OR ftp server. Now, it has a paralell for the print server, it might use the USB too, I dunno. Asus has a compatibility chart here

http://usa.asus.com/products/communi...er-support.htm

They have some other specifics on the chipsets in the webcams, on the same site.

I am not sure that USB hub idea would work, but its worth a try, haha. Call Asus up, ask em! That would certainly rock though. Multiple devices!

Now if I could find a cheap bluetooth PCMCIA card that would fit under the port flappy enclosure completely, I would be a happy man with my w1.

Asus W1 and USB Hub

From Asus support website:

Quote:
Q: Can WL500g support USB hub??

YES, but only support multiple USB disk combine with one printer. Webcam take too much resource, so could not use together with others.
If yes, how many hubs and how many devices behind the hubs??

>There are no design limitation, but limited by memory. So we will not suggest connect over 2 devices.

Any brand (or chip) limitation on the USB hub?

>No

Ooh, didnt think to check the faq. Nice post hgilson!

This sounds like it requires testing though. I would assume... that the webcams only use the resources when in use, so you could have one plugged in, and just log in to it whenever, whih would cause the tput on ftp disks to drop. And, you dont print 24/7 either.

Sounds like we need to crack the 500g, overclock the hell out of it, water cool it... LOL

Thanks EricT and Hgilson for the prompt response to my question on the WL500G router.

Hgilson -- would you mind giving us the URL link to the Asus FAQ or support site you mentioned above? I may a couple other questions on the WL500G which may already be covered by the FAQs.

Thanks again, guys.
