Review: Asus M6N and Asus W1- A comparative review. - Page 3

Another quick question for you guys:
Would another possible option be to use a "parallel-to-USB converter" (is there such a thing?), so one would then just use the USB port on the router to connect the disk drive and then "convert" the available parallel port into a USB port for a USB printer?

p.s. to Hgilson -- I've just found the web page for Asus's FAQs on the WL500G router. Thanks.

Since you seem to be in the know about Asus and these notebooks, I thought I'd ask two questions and I apologize if they've been answered a million times before. The first is will the M6bne get the WSXGA, and the second is will the W1 get a Radeon 9700 128mb or a Fire Gl video card??? I'm doing CAD and solid modelling and stuff so I figure that I should maybe opt for a better video card. Also, any word on when the W1 will be user configurable?

from people's communication with asus and asus retailers... seems like neither will happen

On the m6n- I havent asked in awhile, but they werent sure at the time. Last I heard all tehh wsxga screens were going into the w1s, which dont look like they are going to change- rumor has it that model will be replaced by another totally different model. That I hope to high heaven has bluetooth, I need it! Hehe.

hi folks

didnt want to start a new thread but im having trouble burning in faster speeds with the dvd burner on my asus m6n..its certified as a 2X dvd burner but i can only manage 1X burns on it using media that is certified as 4X (princo and ritek)

does anyone have the same problems?

btw i use recordnow max and nero to burn

I use nero, I have only used the DVD burner for data backups, and mine ran at 2x without a complaint. That was using TDK media, DVD- minus.

Pogi, I have the exact problem. Nero marks the time as being a half hour but then the burn takes 1 hour anyways. There are many people with the Toshiba burner that complain of the same problem.
just want to confirm that this 1 hour is just burn time correct?
no simulation time beforehand nor verification time afterwards?
yupz no simulation time nor verification

just a straight up simple burn...ive used various programs like nero, recordnowmax, dvdshrink, etc. i can verify that my harddrive is a 80gb 5400rpm drive as it says so on the box and according to sisoft sandra

sorry to hear you have the same prob manny

strange tho that its like this...as asus claim its a 2x burner..you can even choose to burn at 2x..but it always reverts back to 1x

That is wierd. I should clarify my post above- I have an Asus W1 that I was talking about not having burn issues with, at least I dont think. I will pay better attention on my next backup.

EricT.....quick question for u:
The W1N sold in the US, unfortunately, does not come with either the tuner or remote control. I don't care much about the tuner, but would love to have the functionality of a remote control, esp when I'm watching a DVD. Do u know if the US model comes with the IR receiver pre-installed anyway, and if I can just simply buy a remote control from Asus (perhaps from one of its European or Asian tech support centers), install the driver (and the Asus Mobile Theatre software), and voila, have remote control of the multimedia funcstions on the W1N?

I recently got my hands on some TDK's that are rated to be 2X, and they do indeed burn at the rated speed

Eric, I know the top and bottom of the W1N are made of Aluminum. But what about the sides (the black border) and the inside of the screen (also the black part)? Are they aluminum as well or plastic? And what about the front grille that covers the speaker and the LED array? Thank you.

Sony and Ritek burn at 2X too.

Hey DW-

Sorry for the delay, I dont really check up on this thread.

The black parts are the same kind of plastic as the M6 chassis has. The silvery parts are the only aluminum, and I believe its some sort of aluminum hybrid (mixed in with another metal, dont know which. I think- could be wrong.)

There are 2 grills- The front, by the audio ports, and directly above the keyboards. Both are thin metal, I believe the same aluminum but painted black. But I dont know for sure.

Everything on my W1 is holding up fantastically. I travel with it daily, to customers houses, and the flip out port cover shows zero sign of deterioration. I am quite happy in my choice. I will note that the WSXGA+ screen does burn more battery, significantly more. My M6 had at least 45 minutes more battery time. But the audio on my W1 is way superior. For integrated sound, it is great.

ZZT- I asked them about the mobile home theater/remote control thing. They refuse to realease any of that in the US. (Asus is whom I speak of). That includes the remote.

My opinion, the M6 had way better IR printing ability than my W1. Hence the need for bluetooth, which I plan to add in next week. I will post on that later.

Thats it from me for now,

Eric

I really thought the black parts are aluminum painted black. Thank you very much for clearing that up.

No prob. I found that out as some of the paint has worn off where my laptop bag rubs part of the chassis. Like I mentioned before, this thing is in and out of my bag 5x a day on a busy day.
