A firewall such as Zone Alarm, Outpost, Sygate, etc. Dunno about Outpost, but the other two have free versions.

Virus scanner.

If you're gonna use IE to browse the web better load up on the spyware cleaners/protectors such as AdAware, Spybot Search and Destroy, Spyware Blaster, etc. The more the merrier cause some catch things that another misses. I personally recommend an alternate browser such as Firefox or Opera but they both have something of a learning curve, especially Firefox. They're not quite "out of the box friendly".

Perhaps the only other thing I'd recommend is a third-party disk defragmenter such as Perfect Disk because XP's own isn't that good. Everything else is up to you really e.g. Adobe Acrobat, FTP program, an alternate media player for movies such as Zoom Player, maybe winamp for MP3s or Power DVD for watching DVDs.

There are certain programs that I can't live without, but my needs are different to your own.

Forgot to mention Nero, assuming you have a burner which most people seem to.

antivirus= nod32

zonealarm = bloatware

outpost works well, is much more flexible with its rules based model and leaves a small footprint

also, instead of a third party app popup stopper, download the google toolbar from google.com, it includes a great popup stopper as well as additional functionality

i vouch for firefox as a browser, it works great

and nod32 as antivirus is great but leaves alot to be desired for worms/trojan protection (get a separate anti trojan program)

I like Sygate myself (you're right about Zone Alarm being a hog not to mention it doesn't like emule) and avast! is a great free antivirus.

Didn't know there were so many Firefox fans on here. I love it!

Quicktime player..just incase you need some Quicktime files to watch.

But keep away from Real Player unless you absolutly need it.

My programs that I'm absolutely fine with.. might need some nice new games though, the demos that came with my video card aren't that super.

I'd like to add that I have never had 1 popup or virus.. so I don't know what internet sites you are going to or what you are doing, but I've never had a problem.

Not having any viruses I can believe cause I've never had one either *knocks on wood* but I call bull on no pop-ups cause those things are everywhere.

Visit Hotmail for example and they have one.

Oh yeah, like the Warez P2P client. lol

wo0t firefox! ff > ie anyday

GAIM for instant messaging. Connects to all the major networks, AIM, Yahoo, MSN, ICQ, IRC.

Dump IE for Firefox too. Ad and popul blocking, tabs, fewer security holes.

Anyone tried X-Fire?
post #16 of 18
Heh, I get no popups because I use firefox. I have not gotten 1, ever.
post #17 of 18
Well that goes without saying, but technically you are using a pop-up blocker. It's just included as a part of a program (or you can get a better one via the AdBlock extension).
