The best notebook screen I've ever seen is the 16.1" Crystal View SXGA+ on Fujitsu's N5000 series. It's got a 600:1 contrast ratio and is absolutely gorgeous.
Dell's 8600, 9100, and XPS have very nice widescreen LCDs. The Sharp and Samsung WSXGA+ and WUXGA LCDs are excellent on those three models.
The Sager 8790 and 4790/50 along with HP's zd7000 series have very bright and crisp 17" WSXGA+ widescreens, but they have a hi-gloss surface that can put out a lot of glare. Most people don't have any problem with the gloss/glare, but it was way too distracting for my tastes. It felt like I was staring in a mirror whenever I looked at the screen.
