I am expecting to kill as much under $1500 as i possibly can.
Can it be done with the following:
40gb 5400rpm (7200..better....60gig...optional)
1.7 dothan (or better)
abf, i'm glad to see that you made a decision based on information, rather than persuasion.
i hope you used some of the benches i posted in that big thread earlier to see that the perf delta is really unimpressive between the two chips (i just don't see, from the numbers, how a 3000+ is significantly better, as some people contend), and the benefits are great (especially in your case, with the internal wifi!
i too really would like to get an a64 chip (like an acer ferrari type system), but i can't see 64-bit apps making a huge differential asap in the years to come. sure, it'll probably big a huge difference once longhorn comes out, but let's face it, we'll both probably want new, faster laptops in 4 years. i might be changing my story if PCI-e were out already, then maybe we could upgrade the vid card / proc in 4 years at a minimal cost. this would be an easy switch that would take advantage of 64bit apps, meaning that we could justify the immediate disadvantages of getting an AMD a64 proc now (heavier systems, lower batt life).
i love systems like the ferrari, but like you i can't help but be swayed by the <$1500 price of a dothan system like the cl56. i'm looking to buy one soon too, the stores i'm looking at might be similar to yours:
1. mwave ($1500) 2. rjtech ($1587) 3. dlaptops ($1650) 4. hypersonic ($1700)
i have a 60 gig in there in place of your 40 gb 5400, plus i would get pc2700 kingston from mwave. i think that's the best option right now. mixothapixcam ordered a cl56 from there, and their support seems pretty good from emails and my prior experiences (many component orders in the past).
good luck with the search
