Enable S/PDIF output on 8050?

I can't seem to figure out how to enable S/PDIF output on my Mitac. It seems like when I first installed the drivers, there was an advanced button under my Master Volume tab and I could enable it through there... but now that's gone and I can't figure out how to enable S/PDIF output.

I tried just hooking it up via coaxile to my receiver and nothing.

Is it even coaxile? I didn't think it's optical because I didn't see any light being emitted, although the manual says it's a Class 1 laser.

Any help?

It is optical. It is the same one as the headphones(FAR LEFT).
You should update the newest drivers, it will allow you to set the spdif control.

I downloaded a version from Realtek, a361, and I can't control the SPDIF. It has a volume slider but it's grayed out...

SHould I be able to see the led/laser glowing when SPDIF is turned on? I know on my DVD player I can see it quite well when there's no cable in it.

OK, I just tried the driver you linked to and it's doing the same thing. THere's no option in the Volume Control to turn SPDIF on or off. There IS an SPDIF volume control, but both the balance volume sliders are grayed out.

I can select what I want the SPDIF to output via the Sound Manager or turn it off, there. Is that the way it should be? Can I use a regular optical cable to test it or do I need a special cable to fit the round hole on my notebook?

Not yet. Does it require a smaller cable tjhan the regular Toslink? The ones I have have the squarish plug, about 1/8 inch across.

You dont need to control spdif volume, the receiver will handle all of that.
Just turn it on in the sound effect manager.
No you will not see a red light.
You will need a mini adapter to fit over the regular fiber optic plug.

thanks!

And where might I find one of these adapters or possibly a regular cable with a mini plug on one end?

Dont know if there is one with just one end.
Just buy a cable with the mini adapters included with it.

Walmart sells them, I remember seeing them for $8 locally.

Hi khisayruou,

So we can't see the red light? Do you have any links / documentation about this?

Because my laptop (Acer 8204) also has SPDIF and I've been trying to find out whether it's electrical (coaxial) or optical...

W/ regards,
