Well, I received my mitac today from the fedex truck (along with my best friend down the street) we ordered at the same time, and both got the same thing, for our college computers (freshmen). I'm typing on it now and hope to give yet some more feedback on the lovely machine
. I posted a few pics at the bottom, they were hosted free, so I dont know how long they will last bandwidth wise.. and they are big, but only a few :P
LAPTOP:
1.7ghz dothan
1024 pc-2700 kingston
128mb ati 9700
dvd/cd-rw combo
2200bg wireless
60gb 7200rpm hitachi
and the typical mitac stuffs
$2237 after $90 2nd day shipping option
RESELLER:
We chose ABSpc.com, and man, I was more than amazed. We both placed our order Tuesday the 6th of july and both received our laptops around 2pm on friday the 9th of july, you don't see that often.. My guess is they had these laptops prebuilt and preassembled due to high demand and prediction of sales, because with second day shipping.. they assembled, installed software, "burned-in" and shipped our laptops on the same day.. Amazing, A++ for abspc, very quick, very well packaged, and very informative. My shipping address was different from my billing address, and along with the couple immediate confirmation emails, they later sent to me, personally, a further security confirmation of my ship to bill to situation, approving it.
And on to the hardware..
I may mention here that I have had the laptop for only 12 hours, but I haven't felt this confident before, if anything changes over time, I will definetly post my findings or other gripes.
SCREEN:
No dead pixels on either of our mitacs

Seeing this 15.4' wxga in person really is different from screenshots, the screen is amazing, personally, I believe it rivals the new $2800 sony wuxga 17'uber hotness, when it comes to Brightness and Clarity, no, you will not get the nice resolution, but I am very happy with this screen.
There is some light blacklight leakage at the bottom of the screen, like most laptop screens I believe, however, it is undetectable in any normal application, unless the game or program is very very dark or has a black background. A++
COMFORT/BUILD:
It is light, slim, sleak, nice looking, what else could I ask for, im very glad I went with this over the Dells and comparable models, considering their added thickness, etc. They keyboard is very very nice on this mitac, strong and not cluttered, yes you have the infamous FN Control key hassle, but it doesn't phase me really, Its just something to get used to in the matter of a few days.
Otherwise the model is sturdy so far, I have carried it in its supplied case to and from my friends house for some wireless gaming, and I have no complaints.
As for HEAT, the thing does get lukewarm left of the touch pad, but it is definetly not uncomfortable, and the air which is periodically blown out the *left* side (not right) of the laptop is indeed hot, however, has no negative impact on me, in fact, it shall warm my cup of noodles or coco at college
. A+
NOISE/SOUND:
Having come from building my own desktops, with overclocked cpus, overclocked gpus, etc. I am used to loud decibel fans, so to me, this machine is silent, even when its fan periodically turns on to exaust heat, I can't be disturbed by its peaceful hum. The harddrive alike (being a powerful 7200rpm 60gb one) is very silent, and only is audible when installing programs it seems. The cd/dvd combo drive does make scratchy noises when cranking out data from a cd, but its all in order, and dvds are not much of an issue in that respect, just installations of programs really.
The speakers are very very decent for a laptop, having had worked at circuit city for a couple years, I was always able to play around with the big brands laptops, hp, compaq, toshiba, sony....... their sound is very inadequate compared to the mitac, which can produce, although not heavy, decent mids and high music or dvd sound for presentation purposes, in a small to midsize room.. yes this extremelly powerful on board subwoofer helps im sure....
. I am impressed on how laptop sound chips have evolved, the realtek 97 on this mitac has a built in equalizer, with presets, along with environment settings like Concert hall, and Bathroom, and Arena, etc. similar to my creative audigy2 o.0 Me personally, I will be using headphones most of the time, and they sound Perfect, if not better than if i have them plugged into my comparable desktop. Very nice indeed!!
BATTERY ETC.:
I have had the opportunity to drain the battery once today, doing regular things from listening to some mp3s, to installing various simple programs, to browsing the internet, and it lasted just over 3 hours and 30 minutes total, this was on medium brightness, which is adequate. I don't intend to run games on this laptop often using the battery, the cpu becomes clocked to 600mhz and i don't feel like pumping it up, which will cause the battery to drain even faster (if i can even raise the cpu that is). But the ticker on the battery shows about 2 hours and 15 minutes when the brightness is all the way up, and a game is running on the battery at the slower speed.
The touchpad on this thing is great, much better than HPs Toshibas or Compaqs I have tried in the past, it doesn't jump or jitter, and requires only a very light, non-damaging touch to use. I did buy a $40 logitech wireless mouse for when i game with the machine, which was easily installed instantly upon entering its receiver into a USB port, no driver needed
WIRELESS:
Nice! I bought a linksys G router the day before the laptop arrived, and upon turning it on (it had about a 17 second boot time... wow, faster than my comparable desktop with a pentium4 3.2ghz) it was able to detect, and run at excellent speed within a minute. I was able to go about 100 feet from my cluttered router, across the house, before the signal was dropped, I believe i can move the router if I want to use it further away. I did update ABS preinstalled driver to a newer intel one, both worked great, I just like the peace of mind
Here are a few pics:
(if they are working

I can't seem to think if there is anything else I need to add right now, ask away if you have any questions, In conclusion though, I am very satisfied right now, and hope this "microsoft office" machine lasts me at least 3 years in college
, I'll have my desktop for the serious apps, oh, and this mitac got about 2500 3dmark points at default in 3dmark 2003, my desktop gets 6000, so although it runs games smoothly, mobile graphic chips still have some ways to go
Thanks!
