Why does Sony partition its Hard Drive?

I have had A190 and S150 and both came with 1 HDD that was partitioned.

Its annoying to have to change C drive to D drive to install programs and also to defragment both.

Why does Sony do this and how do I remove the partitions without erasing any info.

Just another reason why you should always format a oem computer. Reminds me why i've always built my systems (with exception to the laptop i own). If i were you i would back everything up, and just wipe it all clean.....it definetly can't hurt.

It's because of the way they do recovery

The "system" partition is C, the apps partition is D, and you can restore either/or with the hidden partition they also have on the disk.

Hey, real fast, a question about the S150 - what size is the screen? 1280x800 or 1366x768? :P

Sony's big on the whole media thing. Some editting programs prefer having 2 drives to work with, instead of running from and saving to the same partition. It's annoying. That other partition was totally empty on my Vaio when I got it.

I like having lots of partitons myself. I have five 15GB partitions now, System, Music, Movies, Downloads, and Temporary. It keeps everything ordered nicely, and you don't need to worry about your files when re-install. I wouldn't like my apps to be on any other partition than the C: though, WTF was Sony thinking. That makes updating programs a real PITA.

its 1280 x 800 native and no option for that 1366 reso

this is why I feel like the 32mb 9700 might also be a mistake

but i really dont care i will continue to cost Sony as much money as i possibly can with returns extended to the longest periods and free shipping incentives

they deserve it for their bad marketing decisions

what partition is the page-file for virtual memory active on?

both?

and how can I increase and decrease partition sizes?

Shouldnt I install apps on System Partition and declare the other partition the "workspace" ? Not sure how...

its good to have ur hard disk partitioned

windows when it boots up scans the boot partition (C, so if u have a smaller C: drive it speeds up ur boot time

also if u want to clean install ur OS after format u neednt back up all ur data if u store it on the other partition, just reinstall the programs.

i have like a 2 gb C: and large D: & E: drives, which i use to install programs & keep my data respectively

u can use partition magic to merge the partitions if u wanna, but its finicky so do it only if u r comfortable with pm
