Looking to buy a notebook..

Hey, I'm about to buy a new notebook for college. I suppose the main things I'd be doing are taking notes, playing DVDs, downloading/burning music and browsing the web and such. My college provides wireless internet access and I will definitely want to be taking advantage of that. I haven't played any games online in awhile, but I used to play quite a lot. It would be very nice to be able to play games that are pretty taxing, though to be honest I don't know if I will be...

I have been browsing some discount stores and I found a few things that stuck out. I should note that right now I'm on a 933mhz P3 Desktop and it's really got plenty of speed. My price range maxes out at around $1,200. Here's some stuff I found:

1.4Ghz P-M Compaq: http://www.ecost.com/ecost/shop/deta...=391054#scroll

Compaq 2.8Ghz Mobile P4

Compaq 2.4Ghz Mobile P4: http://www.pricegrabber.com/search_g...sterid=2258681

Acer 1.4Ghz P4-M

Dell 2.8ghz Mobile P4

Gateway Tablet: http://www.pcmall.com/pcmall/shop/de...sp?dpno=450839

I had a couple of questions besides just "which is best?" First, how good is something like a Radeon 9200? I have a PCI 32mb (maybe 16 mb, can't remember for sure) GeForce mx400. How much better/worse is the Radeon 9200? Can an "integrated video card" play any kind of games at all? How possible is it to upgrade the cards? I thought I heard something about a docking station ... how much would that all cost, minus the video card? Lastly, what does something like this mean:
ATI MOBILITY™ RADEON™ 9000 with 128MB DDR (Shared)
Does that mean that is a 128mb video card, the way mine is 16/32 mb? Is that going to be very high quality one or not as great as I seem to make it out to be?

If I buy a refurbished notebook/tablet, am I taking a gamble? Does refurbished mean that it was actually used by someone and then returned or what? How reliable is it?

I also have been leaning towards the gateway tablet PC. Is there any reason that I shouldn't get this? I love the idea of a 14.1" tablet, as it means I can take notes in class and have a large monitor (for a tablet anyway) at a low price. It also has everything I wanted except for a video card. Will the built-in one be able to play anything/is it possible to upgrade it?

Oh, and I suppose some companies make more reliable systems than others ... I'm on an HP right now, I had a Sony and both were just fine. I know enough about using a computer that I don't tend to have any problems. Is there still some reason that I just shouldn't get, say a Compaq/Gateway?

Also, if anyone knows of any other great deals, feel free to post them. Thanks a bunch, I know this was a lot to read..

I had personally owned the model similar to that with a Radeon 9600 in it..
You would do yourself some good to head over to www.compaq.com and look at the new models..

One with 128mb Radeon 9600 can be had for $1299

Don't even think about buying a notebook with shared graphic memory. Those cards take their memory right from your RAM. Try to find a notebook with at least an ATI9600 with 64 (preferably more) dedicated RAM.

i wouldnt reccomend compaq....customer support SUCKS. reception to INDIA SUCKS, and they make you to freaky things such as taking out your battery and pressing the on/off button over and over again for 15 seconds to "fix" problems. Look at the sentia at www.alienware.com . suits my needs so far, and we have the same needs. Only thing is, the new sentia is small, so make sure you are ok wit that.

I've had different support from Compaq. I broke the connector on my power supply. I called Compaq. I was only on hold for 5 minutes. The person was a very clear speaking American and my replacement arrived the next day.

Really, all of the machines listed are fine. If you want to play any recent games (last 3 years) you'll want to get at least a Radeon 9200 or Nvidia 5200, but if you want to play them in high resolution or high graphics you'll want to get at least 9600/5600. Yes, don't get shared memory.

I'm not sure what the situation in college is now-a-days. I do know that if you go to school somewhere really hot, the girls wear less, which is nice. But seriously, I doubt they have power reptacles at every desk, so it seems to me that having Pentium M based system would be the most beneficial because of battery life and weight. Seems like you'd want a smaller rather than larger sceen for class so you'd have room on you desk and not so much bulk to carry around. These are just my speculations as there seem to be lots of people on this board in school using large and heavy Sagers with lousy battery life but lots of gaming power.

I personally would say M6809 Emachine...if you can cough up 1649 you'll get 250 back in rebates and another 70 in best buy rewards money. For the price, its probably the best witht he AMD64 and a nice clocking ATI card. Stay away from shared memory. I would take a machine with 64 dedicated memory over 128 shared. Oh, and your going to collge...always keep an open mind that you'll be invited to LAN games heh

Compaq support isn't too bad based on what a friend had told me. His modem died in his, about a 10 min call, and compaq arranged ups to pick up and had it back in about a week, no postage paid, compaq took care of it all.
Me personally, (not to offend) but I would stay away from dell. Had too many probs with there CS.

Refurbished SUX, Gambling your money YES....
Compaq is ok but what exactly are you inquiring about the video card for?
Games? Images? rendering? or just plain daily work, webbrowsing, opening pdf or word files?
