Best Built-in Speakers on a Laptop

Thread Starter
I've been looking for some time for a laptop with good speakers and sound quality (bass). Call me picky, but I don't want to have to wear headphones to listen to music or watch movies.

I've listened to a couple of laptops with Harmon Kardon speakers (HP Zx series, Toshiba) and also JBL (Compaq R3000 series) and they both sound superior to much of what's out there.

I'm also looking at Acer because of its built in subwoofers, but can't try it out.

Which of these combinations do you think would provide the best sound quality (bass) and volume?

buy a set of those speakers that clip on to the sides of your screen, those things are fxcking incredible.. i had a pair of those for a while till i sold my laptops.. but they are the best soundsng laptop speakers i ever had.. they only cost like 20$, they are light weight and portable, and they clip together for easy storage.. but make sure you DO NOT get the PCMCIA card type.. they are just a pain in teh ass..

Dell Inspiron 9100

The I9100 has the best built in speakers out there right now that I know of, the highs are extremely crisp thanks to separate tweeters and there is a sub in the battery which sounds very good and gets quite loud. Granted it's nothing compared to regular 2.1 systems but for on your lap sound like this is very nice!

You simply are not going to get very good sound from a notebook's internal speakers. Its simply a matter of size of the speakers and power they have and the physical characteristics of the enclosures. While there are very good speaker systems that are only a few times larger, ie - Bose, even that size difference makes a big difference. Most of the cost of a notebook go into the display, the processor and the mainboard as well as the battery power system. They don't have the money to spend on high end speakers as well.

You may get good, even better, but not great sound. If you want to get good sound, you need to invest in good speakers. An external sound card would be a good idea as well.

is it possible to throw some HK speakers in my 8890? or for that matter, any other manufacturer?

I would go for those high end speaker laptop like harmon of jbl anyday . However, build-in sub really adds good dept to the sound. Personally, I like average speakers with a sub better than high end w/o sub. I had run around six months ago and that is why I did not get HPxxxx (can't remember the serie) even though HPxxxx has harmon speakers. Keep in mind that even with 4.1 build-in lappy speakers will hardly top desktop 2.1. So far we still can't expect too much of sound quality from a laptop. Not that technology won't allow it. But if one is available, it should be outrageous in price. Just my two cents.

Its really hard for a laptop in its limited space to have excellent sound. However, laptops that have subwoofers on them sound significantly better than laptops without them. My Gateway has one built-in and it sounds wonderful. My friend has a Dell with one built into his battery and that sounds equally as good. However, I did not get a chance to try out laptops with Harmon Kardon or JBL speakers. From what I have heard, the sound quality of these speakers are far better than the average laptop speakers. So if you cant or dont want the subwoofer, I suggest you definately go for these.

all laptop speakers are horrible this is because they are too small and too underpowered to have a respectable playback,
