I am about to buy the 8600 and I have been looking around for third party memory. Are there any companies who produce RAM that would not work in the 8600? Do I have to go with crucial because this seems to be the most expensive for a single stick of 1 GB? Besides newegg.com, are there any other places I should look to purchase the RAM? Thanks to anyone who replies or sends me a message.

I hadnt logged on in a while. My spider sense was tingling, and here I find my guide back in circulation in Dell General

I am glad that everyone has had such success using my guide

In answer to the memory question, get the kingston ram from newegg. It should be the cheapest and it also works great. I have 2 sticks of 1GB kingston ram in my 8600. It gets blazing hot while gaming, but otherwise it works great!

And if I may run up my rating a little, I would ask that people who have found my guide successful to please click the little check box beneath my name and add positive points to my reputation.

Thanks for stopping by!

So this is the page to ask for help? See ill be picking up a new Laptop soon, but ive spent weeks simply reading info (Never bought a laptop, last computer i bought was a Dell Desktop)... and while i considered going with something like the Mayhem from ABS Computing, ill probably end up with a Dell... I want it mostly for Schoolwork, but the occasional game, so the Dell 9100 seems like the logical choice...

Thanks for the great advice. I think one of the most important things is knowing what you want and waiting for the killer deal. I waited over a month to order my 9200, but it paid off. Last Christmas I got over $825 off (Dell price was 2113.00, I paid 1290 + CA Tax). It was a combination of coupons that luckly were accepted easily (no need to call).

It would be easier on everyone if you could chose in the menu who you want to speak with as far a language or accents go and there would be less trouble.I just politely say I cannot understand you,I am going to call back and try to talk to someone else.Oh and nice job on the guide.

Seriously though, if you talk nice to reps and be firm, you can get what you want/need. If you look at my specs below, I got my system for $750 including my carrying case.

Just a little OT question:is it reasonable to buy the complete care pack against accidental damages? I've read that sometimes , also with the basic 3y NBD warranty, they change or adjust your notebook even with damages caused " by lack of attention" ; i'm asking you this, 'cause the rep every time try to sell my this package, and the price is not so cheap, i mean, finally the lap has a good price but the insurance itself has the same price u can find on the web.. do u guess is a good thing to buy it? .OT ended. Thanx

Wow, way to bring a up a very dead thread. In actuality, Dell has a lot of sales right now. Recently, and maybe it's still going on, there was a sale through the EPP which knocked off a total of 46% of the price, which would've saved the original poster more money, had this deal been around at the time. Also, Dell has free shipping for basically all their laptops now. You'll be better off just finding a good deal, and they come up relatively often now now that Dell has to try to make up for poor performance, than going through the process illustrated in this thread, as it can be very time consuming and frustrating.
