Speakers

unfortunately our laptops only support 2.1 speakers... and since im not ready to dish out another 100+ dollars on an external sound card, i guess im gonna go with 2.1 speakers.

Anyone have any suggestions on good ones?

yeah, the klipsch promedia 2.1 speakers. they're expensive but very nice. i've got them on my desktop which supports surround sound. i gave up a low powered creative surround system for these things. they'e got serious wattage for a 2.1 system, the sub has some serious power. it'll run you around 130-150 bucks though. i find that the price is well worth it.

I have the Creative Labs Inspire 2.1 and they sound great. The Klipsch do sound better, but cost about 50-70 bucks more. I really impressed with the Creative speakers.

I knew I bought the Creative Extigy for more than the optical out/in.

Will come in handy when I get my lappy

G'luck finding speakers! Try epinions.com or Cnet for reviews of any that catch your eye (although I personally don't like epinions very much).

I can't remember the last pair of computer ones I've bought as my desktop has always been near to my home theatre setup. One 10" sub + a power 6.5" one is always fun...

I have the Creative, Sound Blaster SBS270 speakers... They work very well for my needs, playing music, games, movies...

Logitech Z-2200's

I would recommend the Logitech Z-2200's they have the same components as the 5.1 Z-680's just 3 less satalites (or however you spell that). Lott's of power too!

sorry but this is where i must step in and protest agains the logitech z-2200 series. the sub actually has too much power. i've listened to them myself and read many reviews, and people say that the bass isn't smooth base but the annoying rumbling kind that sounds terrible. To come even come close to acceptable bass levels, you have to keep the sub atleast 2-3 feet away from a wall or corner. i've tested both the klipsch 2.1 promedia's and the z-2200 and i decided to get the klipsch even though they cost more. Besides, I'd much rather buy speakers from a company that makes ONLY speakers, rather than a company where speakers are just a small part of the lineup. Also, can't remember if the Logitech's had this feature, but the Klipsch 2.1 has a headphone port on the side that will cut off the speakers and switch to headphones, and also a line-in so you can hook up your MP3 player etc. to it.

Hi

when you speak about 2.1 is it trough the microphone output ? can't we also use the spdif output (and I tought this one supported 5.1 but I am maybe wrong) ?

the speakers go through the headphone output. and i have no clue what spdif output is. and no, just about all lappys are 2.1

btw, i think im gonna go with some klipshes. Gonna start looking around for a deal.

Spdif

Sony/Philips Digital Interface (if i remember correctly) plus our lappys don't have that port unless you get a USB sound card then it might but those are for high end speakers like the Z-680's.

In response to nickmv

As of right now I have the Logitech Z-340's and they sound great but I have been reading reviews and such for the 2200's becuase I am considering buying them to compliment my new lappy. From what I have read most reviews say they are the best 2.1's out there. http://www.maximumpc.com/reviews/spe...04-01-15a.html

Now nickmv I am not trying to prove you wrong or anything I just wanted to present what I have found to Evo so he can make his decision, becuase I know that my next speaker purchase will be the Z-2200's.

BTW Evo, don't get confused between Promedia 2.1 and Promedia GMX 2.1. The GMX is a crappy version that looks cool for gamers but seriously lacks power, for the same price.

ComputerGeek, my point is that I've heard both of them in a computer room environment and the Z-2200's bass was just to rumbly and not smooth oomph.

You can get the Klipsch Promedia 2.1 at Best Buy. I've been unable to find the Z-2200 in any Best Buy, Circuit City, Office Depot, OfficeMax, etc.

Just go to Best Buy and try em out. You can always take them back. Oh ya, don't try the display model, they're almost always busted cuz of kids coming up to them and cranking them to max volume. Arrgh, best buy needs to keep certain things out of reach of kids.

i just remembered one of my suitemates had the Klipsch Promedia 2.1s last year... and i agree, they are incredible. But they're kind of old speakers now, 3+ years? ....im still very curious about the logitechs...

ugh, decisions.
Tell that to people with Klipsch Heritage speakers. They're from around the 50's - 70's or earlier, and still sell for hundreds of dollars per speaker. Trust me, just because they're old doesn't mean they're bad. I love these things and I wouldn't trade em for anything......actually I will...for the Klipsch Promedia 5.1 Ultra SOMEDAY. LOL, until college is done, which I'm fixing to START, 2.1 is basically a necessity. I'm gonna keep a tally of how many times people from down the hall tell me to turn down the bass because it's shaking the floor, or someone from under me saying their ceiling is rattling.

Also, Klipsch has dedicated forums for their speakers. People frequent them all the time. It's a great support community. Linky

lol, all the more reason to fork over the big bucks while you still can.

also, someone suggested this to me when I was first looking for a pair of speakers. they said don't look for a good pair of speakers for college, look for a good pair of HEADPHONES. the statement is very true. You might wanna cut your cost and get a low-powered speaker set and invest in some nice Sennheiser headphones. They make the best headphones out there. I'll be getting a pair. A family member of mine let me try his out one time, and it was incredible how good is sounded. The bass on these headphones was phenominal. I played Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon, and wow it sounded great.

And if you get some of those nice speakers, regardless of whether it's Logitech or Klipsch, you should listen to Dark Side of the Moon all the way through. Sounds great.
