I can help out with a slightly unique perspective: I'm a current SU Student (senior in ECS). First off, here is a link for all of the hotspots on campus:http://cms.syr.edu/connecting/wireless/locations.html
Next: Make absolutely sure to invest in somesort of lock for the compy. SU Campus is safe, but it is not unheard of for a compy to grow legs. Especially in any of the libraries.
If you are dead set on office pro, you can pick up a copy in the University Bookstore for $199.99. From what I can tell, the differences between the "academic" and "student/teacher" versions of office that are being debated won't be of much concern to your daughter, but that's my opinion.
One more thing to consider: A friend of mine graduated from Newhouse as a magazine major (switched from newspaper) and used a mac powerbook. It might be a little blasphemous in these boards, but investigate options there. Assuming, of course, you havent purchased the dell yet.
Finally, here's the URL for the campus computer people: they are the ones that make the foolish (imo) policys about the network and such.http://cms.syr.edu
Good luck to your kid. Hardest part about SU is staying warm.
