You can get just a standard hardware AP router that will act as a firewall if you have a boad band connection this is what I suggest doing. If you merely want a software firewall. you can download zone alarm for free.

software firewall (Free!)
Zone Alarm (firewall)

It should. You have just a standard Cat-5 cable you plug into your computer thing give you an IP address. You would take that cable and plug that into the uplink port on the router then plug your router into your computer. I would also suggest getting the wireless one then if you want to move around its alot easier. Simple If your T1 is DHCP enabled should work like a charm. Although I have not ever had the experience to work with a T1 connection Im almost certain it would work.

T1's require a special router to run on, so most likely you already have some form of NAT on your network already.

Actually T1's do not require a "special" router as you put it. They just usually use a higher more advanced type of router like a cisco catalyst.

back to the topic if you have a left over computer that runs. If you can get two nics in it and a hub on the out side. You could get a pretty nice router / fire wall. www.smoothwall.org I've used it before and found it pretty easy to use. With many advanced options like MRTG (Multi Router Traffic Graphing. Just fun to see your usage _)

I agree if you can do this this is the cheapest maybe not the simplest but definatly works well. ( I personaly don't have one but know people that do!)

Ok thanks I’ll look into that. But, basically all i want to do is have a wireless router with a built in firewall that i can plug right into the T1 and go from there. I went yesterday to office depot and looked at D-link and some others. What would you recommend for bpms? I saw 11, 54, and 108 I think.

I think a better question to ask is do you actually have a T1 line running to your house? And if so, is it already hooked up to a router/gateway that any other computers in the house can access the internet through it? Perhaps a picture would be helpful.

As for a wireless router, Linksys/D-Link/Netgear are probably your best 3 options. I personally use both Linksys and D-Link on my network and they both work exceptionally well. Although, I haven't had experience with T1 connections, and I'm not sure that they will work with one.

At my school, we are not allowed to have any routers, switches, hubs or anything..................but we do anyway.

Ok, then is there just a Cat5e Network Jack in your room for you to plug into your computer?
