Black bands on 8600?????

I'm thinking of buying the inspiron 8600, but have heard that when you play a DVD even in widescreen you get black bands on the top and and bottom. Can anyone confirm that. I'm trying to decide between the 8600 and the gateway 675.

Yes you do, because the widescreen ratio of DVDs compared to the ratio of the screen is still different.

No really, there are some movie fit the screen perfectly.
For example, Disney's "Finding Nimo"

Try using Power DVD 5. It has a new feature called "CLEV" which makes all movies, even fullscreen, fit the entire screen of the 15.4" LCD without stretching the picture or anything. I use it and it is great.

Would that be the same for any widescreen notebook??/ Would a larger screen 17.1 wide be any better???

Of course I was speaking generally, some DVD's or DVD software can go the whole screen

And it doesn't necessarily go for every widescreen notebook, as some have different aspect ratio's (the 15.4" on the i8600 is 16:10).

Like Dundee said, the screen on the i8600/i9100/iXPS has an aspect ratio of 16:10, whilst true widescreen is 16:9.

Does that mean that all DVD's in the 16:9 ratio will have the bands? and if so why would dell make there's in 16:10 ratio?
Dell didn't. Samsung, Sharp, Hitachi, Toshiba, etc made their 15.4" Widescreens 16:10 because of size restrictions, costs and other matters. Dell chose to use the 15.4" widescreens so they had to take what was offered by the manufacturers.

As far as I am aware, all widescreen notebooks including the 17" ones are of the 16:10 variety and therefore will have the same band problems.

Currently yes, that is the case.

Hmmm, did you say currently Sakor? Does that mean that Dell's new up and coming model that you keep dropping hints about may have a 16:9 ratio 17" widescreen???

OT: If you see this again Sakor, did you get your copper for the cooling mod locally or online? If so where. The only places I have found it widely available are the foil used in stained glass shops which is too thin. I have found copper shim elsewher, but nothing under 2mm. I can get aluminium in suitable guage, but not sure if this will be as good.

Cheers

No unfortunately, that wasn't one of my hints

I got some copper pieces locally, not going to help you unfortunately, living just about as far away from me as you can in the same country

Anyway, I got it at a metal supplier. Search the yellow pages (online is good) for "Brass & Copper Rod, Section & Sheet W'salers & Mfrs", I found several places that offered it near me in Melbourne under that heading.
