Can't Connect Using WEP

I just got a Linksys BEFW11S4 V.2 router a few hours ago and I have been trying desperately to make my Gateway M505X work with it under WEP. If I disable encryption, I connect just fine with no trouble. But for some reason, every time I turn on WEP, there goes my connection. I always connect, but I never recieve any data. I tried this with a 5-character key, a 13-character key, 64-bit encrption, 128-bit encryption, and nothing seems to be working. Again, without WEP works just fine.

Can anyone help me?

hmm i seemed to have the same problem with my wireless broadband-b linksys router.. i had wep encryptoin enabled .. The Wirless signal was excellant but i coudnt surf the net/ access the internet so i returned it. .. i didnt think of trying it without the encryption.. doh..

The solution is simple. Many hardware providers, such as linksys, use passphrase technology for their wep. Most operating systems use the wireless card's software, however windows xp uses the built in wireless configurator. You must find out the hex wep key, its a very long string of numbers. Use Key 1 and input it directly into the key or wep key box in win xp. The key can be found in the linksys router under the wireless security settings. On other routers it should be found in the menu where you enabled wep.

so ur sayin i should have typed the wep key of the linksys router somewhere in win xp ( im assuming in the properties of my wireless adapter ) ??

thanks

Javalio, i tried your advice and it worked. I secured my open wireless network. Then I started to play a game (not over internet). MY computer suffered a minor crash and I had to reboot. All of a sudden, I can't connect anymore. I changed the Passcode key to see if that would help and alas! it didnt.

Now Ireally dont know what is wrong.

how did u "secure ur open wireless network" ?? by putting a 128 bit key in the linksys menu ?? once u restarted all u did was change the WEP key in the link sys menu???

Yeah ... I'm new to networking and all my networking friends are on vacation, already at college, or vacationing at college so I couldnt ask them at this time. I pretty much know that anyone with the right tools could crack WEP and roam willy nilly over my WiFi. But if they want access, I at least want to make it a little harder than just turning on their laptop.

But there is good news. I tried Javalio's advice again and restarted my computer and that seemed to fix it. And it is working very well now. Big thanx to all.

I also have a Linksys BEFW11S4 V.2 router. Another way to increase the security of your wireless network is to enable MAC filtering. In the Linksys BEFW11S4 V.2, go to advanced wireless. Click on active mac table. You should be seeing your computers mac address there. If there are more than one you may need to double check you wireless cards MAC address.

To do this go to start - run - cmd, click ok. Type ipconfig /all . This should give you the mac address of your wireless adpator.

Once you know your MAC Address, return to the Linksys wireless admin page. Click edit MAC filter setting. In the pop up window type in the MAC address of your adaptor. Do not click the filter box. Click OK and then select the Enable radio button on the Station MAC Filter. That should do it.

Here's the link to the Linksys support page for securing the BEFW11S4. You may also need to update your firmware to have MAC adress filtering.

That sounds cool. I cant do that now, but I will try MAC address filtering.

BTW ... My friends can get past that too with MAC address spoofing.

Yeah, this is true. MAC addresses can be spoofed but using WEP combined with MAC address filtering can add anothert layer of security to make it more difficult. Not much more security, but better than nothing.

What I did was first make WEP Mandatory and changed my passcode to something, like "Phish". Then I clicked on GENERATE and it generated a bunch of hex keys. I copied the key in the KEY 1 box and clicked apply. Then I went over to my laptop and turned on the wireless card. In the network key box, I typed that same hex key i got from the KEY 1 box and confirmed it. Then I said a little prayer and clicked OK. It eventually worked.

go to the dell support website and download the intel pro wireless 2100 drivers.. the gateway ones on the website are out of date and don't support wap. i did it with my m505x and it works like a charm.

also the befw11s4 sucks.. i had one for a day.. didn't work too well i returned it and got the wrt54g for 20 more bucks. updated with special firmware. no problems at all.

Yeah, its a piece of crap. I would have done that weeks ago if I hadn't bought the router off of eBay.
