They're reseller ratings arent really up there, but its ok.

I've heard mixed reactions.

i dunno i think this is an aopen 1557g...could be wrong though, ibuypower's naming scheme is horrible.

Yea, it's the AOpen 1557GL.

Oops my bad, the turbo isn't a CL56, looks like a 1557G, but yea the naming sucks there..

But does anyone know how the laptop itself is i.e. its construction? Is it sturdy, flimsy...

A few words on ibuypower/Aopen:

I ordered a Battalion 101 E series (Aopen 1557GL) from ibuypower in June and I can give those who are interested in either the company or the laptop a few facts/observations.

Ordering - I ordered on the 1st with rush service; the laptop shipped on the 16th. Called several times in between. While the people answering the telephones don't sound like your best friends, they did handle all my issues and concerns (seems they went out of stock on some parts).

Shipping/Packaging - The box it came in was fairly sturdy and well-packed. However, it seemed as if the manual that came with the notebook was from an entirely different laptop (maybe a different Aopen model...1556 perhaps).

Look & Feel - I sprang for the paint job, but was not all that impressed. It really didn't have the glossy look like the hypersonic pictures, or the textured metallic finish of an Alienware (my brother has a Sentia, so this is what I'm judging from). The laptop was about the weight I thought it would be; not heavy at all, but it did seem a bit flimsy. Now, to be fair, I'm working at home with an old Compaq from 5 years ago and at work we use 4 year old Dell Lattitudes. Both of these models are heavy and solid, so it could just be me. It just seemed, though, like the Battalion didn't feel like a computer that would last 3 or 4 years.

Turning Point - Despite all this I was willing to keep the laptop and live with a few flaws (it was a pretty good price after all). Then I saw the real issue...Apparently, when placing the panels back on the chassis after painting, the lower edge of the LCD panel got seriously warped (kinda made the whole laptop look like it had a fat lip or was pouting). That was the straw the broke the camel's back, so to speak, and at that point I called ibuypower, explained my concerns and told them I was ready to ship the laptop back for a refund. So they shipped out a label to me (took 5 days) and I boxed everything back up. Throughout the process, ibuypower was courteous and proficient. Sometimes they were difficult to get a hold of on the phone and I would definitely tell anyone interested not to spring for rush anything from them b/c they seem to take their time. However, it's hard to beat their prices. I will not provide any rating or overall judgement of my experience, as that's something you can do for yourself.

Epilogue - I have now ordered a CX-5 from Hypersonic and am eagerly awaiting delivery (the wait, I'm convinced, is part of some global Hypersonic initiation ritual). It is a little less computer than what I originally ordered from ibuypower, but I think I'll be happier down the road.
