I'm about to order my notebook and na dI can't decide 3 things....
Memory: Should I get the 512,333MHz 1 DIMM, or 512MB,333MHz 2 Dimms???
Video Card: 64MB DDR NVIDIA® GeForce™ FX Go5200 AGP 4X Graphics
128MB DDR ATI's MOBILITY® RADEON™ 9600 PROTURBO
Hard Drive: 60GB Drive 4200 (maybe 5400) or 60 GB Drive 7200

I am not a gamer at all. I will just watch dvds, photoshop, cd stuff, and school work. PLEASE HELP Thank you!!!

Vid card wont matter for what you do. Go for faster hard drive and 2 dimms of RAM.
I would go with 1 DIMM as it will allow you upgrade later if you see the need. Go with the 7200RPM drive, big improvement. The GeForce will be good for photoshop.

Memory - If you plan on adding more RAM later, its better to get it in one stick of 512MB. You are going to have to decide if you will want to add more later.

Graphics card - go with the 64MB card. Since you are not a gamer at all, the 9600 Pro Turbo would be a waste of money.

Hard drive - Go with the 7200rpm hard drive. It is faster, and has a larger buffer. Sakor also says that the faster one produces less heat, but I haven't been able to compare the two.

wait a sec...

why can you upgrade with 1 DIMM and not 2 DIMM???
I would consider not buying the printer from Dell. When you need more ink, you have to get it shipped from Dell. Go down to Best Buy and look at some nice HPs.

You may also want to consider buying the 90w charger if you won't have that much time around outlets. It will charge the battery much faster when you are using the laptop.

You can still upgrade but if you get a stick of 512 in 1 slot you have another slot to put another 512 or 1 gig in the future, but if you get 512 with 256 in each slot then you have to take one out and you will be at 768 if you go with a 512 to replace it or 1256 if you get a gig. Its more cost effective is all. Also you have a random extra 256 mb stick of ram laying around unless you sell it.

The laptop will probably stay in my room most of the time.
Your notebook will have two ram sockets(SODIMMS) to hold up to two modules(sticks) of memory at the same time. We say you can't upgrade because 512 2 SODIMMS is really two 256 modules. While it is still easily possible to upgrade the old original memory pretty much becomes useless. Where if you got 512 1 DIMM you would still have a socket open to upgrade, without scrapping whatever memory may have originally been in there(a 256 module in this case).

Does Best Buy or Circuit City have beeter Printers?? I want all-in- one printers. (Print, copy, and scan) Is an HP printer the best...and does it hook up to a Dell Notebook???
Yes on the hard drive

For the memory: If it is worth the extra $100 to you then yes(in most cases it is). Also keep in mind you could keep the base 256 x 1DIMM and upgrade through a vendor. For instance a 512 module from crucial is only $106 right now. Giving you 768 for not much more money than 512 from Dell in one DIMM.

Besy Buy and Circuit City have pretty much the same selection of printers. HP's are solid. And yes you can hook up a printer to the 8600. The most common interface for printers now is USB. The 8600 has two ports for plugging in USB devices.

Thank you for all of your help

Should I get a port applicator ... I think taht's what it's called? Will it hook my notebook, printer, and mouse into it??

They are handy. If you keep your laptop on your desk most of the time you can plug all of your accesories into it, then just grab the laptop and go whenever you want to take it somewhere. That way you don't have to deal with plugging/unplugging everything all the time.

dell ram upgrade to 1 stick of 512 is pretty expensive, its like $75 more than the the 2dimm... so if you are unsure on whether or not you are going to upgrade just get the 2 dimm. you can save yourself $75 right now... a 512 stick from elsewhere is just under $100, so if you really decide you need 1 gig of RAM later you can upgrade losing about only $20, but who is to say ram prices won't go down by then even?
