gentoo install help

Thread Starter
Im trying to install gentoo on my 8886 but the screen turns black when i leave it alone to compile. Its still compiling but i jsut cant see it. Hitting keys on the keyboard doesn't help.
Im using the 1.4_rc4 cd stage1. and i use the 1280 kernel with nohotplug and noapm options.
Is there any way to stop the screen from turning off?

Did you try the enter key? That's how I got my DEC to come back alive. I haven't tried installing on my Sager, I'm waiting for Laclasse Linux 1.0 custom distro for the Sager.

Enter, esc, arrows.....i even tried pressing them all at once. Nothing worked so i decided to use teh 1.2 cd and now the screen will go black but all i ahve to do now is hit a key and it comes back.

Wasn't there a semi-thorough review of installing Gentoo posted somewhere here? I vaguely recall it saying to use the 1.2, then roll-up to 1.4... not sure if it's related, just something I seem to recall reading.

try nofb nohotplug

I had difficulty with gentoo rc4 stage 3 iso install at first. I tried booting gentoo and 1280 w/ nohotplug nousb etc, and they loaded, then the screen went blank (but it was still on). My solution was as follows... at the boot prompt hit F2 or F3 (it says F? for frambuffer modes). Then type: nofb nohotplug. This worked on my 8887, although I haven't researched to root cause yet.
