Linux/XP Dual Partition

Hello

I was wondering if it would be possible to perform a partition and use my 60GB HD for both Linux and Windows? I was planning on installing Linux first onto one partition, then windows XP onto another. Here's my questions.

1) Will I be able to install a CLEAN copy of windows using the disc that I recieved with my 8790?

2) Which order would be better to install it?

3) Which is the "best" (in your oppinion) linux for laptops? I heard good things about mandrake.

Anyways, thanks for any responses.

Ok I have a dual debain/xp install. The way I did it was to destroy all the partitions then create a partition and install windows to it. After that boot to the linux boot cd and install onto the other partition, make sure you install the boot manager either lilo or grub both seem to work on my 4780.

The "best" distro is more often than not based purely on personal preference. Mandrake, SuSE and Fedora are known to be very easy to install and configure (Slashdot had a posting a little while ago linking to an article that compared the 3. SuSE and Mandrake came out on top). If you are more of a DIY person, I would recommend Debian or Gentoo. They have LOADS of packages, but it may take a more time to get everything up and running (like modem, sound, ...).

Take a look at these forums:

I tried Mandrake and for the life of me could not get the thing to work on the dual boot, debian took right off with no problem.

I still need to know if I can install a full, clean windows XP with the disc they gave me. If not, can I use the key and someone else's XP disc?

Yes you can install windows xp, with the windows xp disc that comes with your computer. That's what it's for, you can do a clean install. Definilty install windows first, makes things a lot easier.
