Hail Linuxians.

Hiya.

I'm a computer science student heading off to college, and will be purchasing a laptop. I am currently considering very strongly purchasing a Compal CL56 (Chembook 2056), although still am having much difficulty with selecting a laptop which fits my needs and budget best. This will be my first laptop ever! Eeee.

A notebook computer isn't the only new experience for me - I've decided to expand my mind and try Linux as well! After doing research on the various distros available, I am leaning toward the Gentoo distribution. As I mentioned before, I am a computer science student, and Linux seems like a very beneficial step in studying within the discipline. I selected Gentoo because of the philosophy behind it - create the best tools you can, and work will be much easier.

I'm glad to see that there are so many thriving Linux communities, and even more glad to see that there is one right here, specifically for notebook users. I just wanted to introduce myself, and say that I hope to become a part of this community as well. I am sure I will learn much through the (free!) loveliness of Linux.

If you had any suggestions or thoughts, please, by all means - share them! My experience is mainly with Windows 9x-XP, although I know a decent amount about DOS and have used Mac OS's on occasion. In particular, if you would, or wouldn't recommend Gentoo for a Linux newbie, and what you would suggest as an alternative if such is the case.

Thanks!

He he Linuxians. Anyway I was into linux for awhile. I started with a simple distro, Mandrake. To get a feel for it. Then I went into my favorite distro slackware. Everything seemed to work, and i learned so much about my computer. Then i tried many other distros, like the elegant but doesn't seem to work all the time red hat 9.0. and then the tough to install debian. very stable though. i have never tried gentoo. i have heard good things about it. just when getting involved in linux try to read about how to use it. it has its quirks but you get the hang of it afterwhile. and the program winex will still be usefull, for gaming. The only thing that may be a turnoff is that you have to practically "build" everything.

and Welcome Aboard!

Your decision to try out Linux, especially Gentoo will prove to be a very beneficial one.

Although I've been quite technologically proficient, I never really worked with Linux... before I installed Gentoo! It was an unbelievable learning experience (you can check out my 5680/8890 Gentoo Thread as a sticky in this forum). I basically went from knowing nothing to being quite proficient in just a few weeks. Yes, it did take lots of reading and lots of fiddling to get some things to work (eg my Linksys Wireless-G PCMCIA, etc. again, check out the thread) but that was the whole point! With Gentoo, I know exactly what is what, where things are, what things depend on each other, etc - its a great feeling to know WTF your system is doing. You can obviously learn a particular 'cooked' distro well to know all these things but then you would probably never bother with all the config files, etc., yourself.

In any case, hope you stick to your decision - good luck! You will have a different machine from mine but dont forget all the info on these forums and feel free to contact me if you need any help (PM, IMs, email).

Mikhail
