Can I upgrade my video card ?

Thread Starter
I have a Inspiron 8100 with a Radeon 7500 64mb video card... I called Dell and the guy said I could go to a ATI Radeon 9700 128mb card... that the laptop would take it... but its not reccomended because I only have a pIII - 1.0ghz processor...

does he know what hes talking about??? is it POSSIBLE for me to put that newer card in and still work??

if its possible, can I ? i mean, would it run slower or something because of my processor or would it be all good... i never heard of a video card and processor problem like that before....

thanks, id like to know for sure before I order one

if you do a forum search, you will find the answer many many times over. as for the dell guy, i honestly have no comment. a blatant load of BS like that has me to stunned to speak.

ok, did a search and didnt find much help.... but i think what i did read means it "IS POSSIBLE" right????

for my computer, is the 9700 the best video card for me???

How exactly can you replace the video card with a newer one when it's integrated on the motherboard? lol. Sounds like he's selling you on a mobo replacement or something.

00bolt, depending on what screen you have, you have a choice of 64MB Geforce4 Go 440, 64MB Mobility Radeon 9000, or 64MB Quadro 4 700 GoGL. All of these cards were manufactured for the I8200 and are listed in order of performance from least to greatest.

The video card on the I8100 is NOT integrated onto the motherboard. The video card on the I8100 can be upgraded but NOT to the Radeon 9700.

ok, if its NOT integrated... and I can upgrade it...

whats the biggest, baddest, newest video card I can upgrade too without getting new motherboard, etc

i currently have the radeon 7500 64mb

I'm running a 64MB M9 in a I8100. The NVIDIA Quadro4 700 Go GL is another more expensive option.

the only mobo you can upgrade to is a c840. there would be no graphical perks for doing it, but you doulr then run pc2100 ddr and have a p4-m proc up to 2.6 ghz

Can we please have more detailed specs OObolt? More specifically and most importantly what screen you have, so we may determine what your maximum upgrade is. But generally the Quadro can be used with just about all of them, if you are willing to part with US$300+. If not the Mobility9000 is your best option and for that we need the information

Yep, UXGA is good. You are fine with all the cards then. Just call spare parts and order the one you want:

- Quadro 700 GL go will give you the best performance, it's price point is high though at >US$300 last time I saw. Part Number 6X935.
- Mobility Radeon 9000 is not quite up there performance wise but still quite good... especially considering it is about half the price. Part Number 4U284.

Installation instructions can be found here.

Good luck,

i did a search on the dell.com website for those part numbers and it found nothing.... is there somewhere else or a link I can follow to find those??

thanks for all the help again

p.s. if I were to get that better Quatro card... with the 512mb and piii 1.0ghz would I be able to play most games out there right now??

how much better is that card than my Radeon 7500 64mb.... 2x as good, 10x as good???

one last question... while i am at it....

can I upgrade my processor too without changing motherboard, etc??? if so, how high of a cpu can i go?
dell.com will only show parts that are considered CRUs (customer replaceable units) Internal parts (or FRUS - field replaceable units) will not be offered for sale online due to the number of people out there who would ruin their systems trying to upgrade them.

you can go to a 1.2ghz pIIIm

if 1.2 is the highest I can go, is it even worth it?? i mean will that ever benefit me the exta .2 ???

also, other than buying directly from dell, are there other websites I can get this card at ie. ebay, etc ???

how does the NVIDIA Quadro4 700 Go GL compare to my Radeon 7500 64mb card???
