m35 console buttons

Thread Starter
i recently installed windows 2003 on my m35. everything is up and running ok except for the console buttons; by which i mean the s-video out button/i-net/console buttons on the left of the keyboard, and the cd player buttons on the front. does anyone know the name of the file/s i need from the toshiba site to enable these buttons?

edit: i installed everything from the "utility" section of the m35 download site, and seem to have everything installed (toshiba console, controls, display device change utility, hotkey utility for display devices, power saver, and utilities), and can access fn-esse, toshiba control settings, etc.; but my console buttons and fn+Fx commands don't do anything. my primary concern is s-video out, and secondarily the cd-player buttons. the other stuff not working isn't too big a deal. any ideas?

Its been a while my toshiba is tri boot mostly running 2003 Ent server. I found almost all the stuff i needed from the DVD that shipped with the unit the xp drivers work pretty well with 2003.

Sorry I don't recall the details about which driver for what. There is a very nice guide over at www.msfn.org about turning 2003 server into a workstation very useful for laptop.

Included in those instructions is how to get the xp backup/restore working so you can set recovery points and restore from them working on 2003 server. Sometimes this can come in handy for software installs/uninstalls but especially useful with drivers.

so, you did get the fn-options and console keys functioning in 2003? i just called toshiba support. to avoid the, "we don't support that get off my phone," reponse, i told the guy i had upgraded from xp home to pro. he told me to install toshiba controls, blah blah blah. i read off the list of what i had installed. he said, "uhm...." and then - and this is an exact quote - "it could be that those features don't work under xp pro. and we don't support that." rather than mention that some m35 models come WITH xp pro, and that there's no technical reason at all that anything that works under the home edition shouldn't work under the pro edition, i just thanked him for his time and hung up.

everyone defends outsourcing with the idea that the people in india are so well-trained, intelligent and even over-qualified to do tech support. so why is it every time i call with a simple issue, all i get is "uhhh" and "we don't support that."

My fn keys work think the only things that don't work (from what I remember) are some weird push down buttons probably specific to the p25 ...

You lost me on the outsourcing quote ... the only reason companies outsource is lower cost -- customer service levels (or not) have nothing to do with it.

Wow I have a very similar dillema. I have an M30 and I upgraded Xp Home to XP Pro, and I can't seem to be able to use the console buttons either. I've tried to install everything (manually because I don't care for much of the programs) but I don't see anything that resembles the program I would need. For myself, the S-video out and in buttons work (I haven't actually plugged them into anything but the screen goes blank) but the media button above it won't work. As well, the Menu button on the front won't work, but the fast-forward, rewind, play/pause and stop work fine.
I figured I should look up the answer in a forum to my problem, because I, too usually find "tech support" useless. Anyhow, since I haven't had any success, I guess I'll try calling in and keep you updated.

Hmmm... I found this rather odd, but I phoned Toshiba the other day and they of course said that Windows XP Pro (the notebook came with Home) would not support the functions because the Home disc is a specially designed disc and that there were certain things on the disc that I would not be able to access with the Pro. Contrary, I listened to the advice and reformatted with Home because I wanted to see what the functions would do, then I decided waiting about an hour to install Pro to check once more if the functions would work- and to my amazement, they DID. The console keys DO work (the Express Media one - ONLY when the computer is OFF) but as for the FN-esse keys, I haven't tried it because I haven't found any use for it yet, however, I will try it later on today.
So I guess in other words, Toshiba was WRONG and they are useless- I found that trying things out and spending a few hours trying to get it to work was more beneficial.
Good luck guys with your M35's
