First laptop advice

I have a few options to spend $1000-$1400 on a new laptop.

Here are my choices I've seen so far in this range (all hp/compaq so far), just looking for opinions on value, I am looking for desktop replacement only for internet, movies, light gaming, some video encoding (limited), portability/battery life is not too important other than around the house:

These prices are assuming $100 rebate on hp + epp discount.

1. 3000Z WUXGA, 256mb, 60gb 4200, A 64-3400, cdrw, 64mb video, 12 cell--$988
2. 3000T WUXGA, 256mb, 60gb 5400, P4 3.0, cdrw, 128mb ati 9600, 12 cell--$1229
3. zd7000 WSXGA, 256mb, 60gb 5400, P4 3.0, cdrw, 128mb nvidia5700, $1391

I am also assuming here that A 64 3400 will give slightly better perf to the P4 3.0 on 32 bit applications, not completely sure here as I have not seen a direct comparison of the two. I really want the A64 but also a good video card, hence my dilema.

i would go with number 2. better graphic card, imho. if you can i would add more ram to 512.

3GHz is overkill for most applications anyway.

Get the P4 with the vid you want

i'd go with #2 also. the 440go just DOESNT CUT IT. Especialy for gaming and video editing. more ram is needed however. go to mwave.com they have 3 systems there for quite cheap that you might be interested in. Go to mwave>notebooks>mwave brand and in that list you will find 1 laptop that starts with 1100 (p4), and 2 that start with 1250 (is is amd64, the other a dothan). i cant think of model # at the time. The dothan system is the ever-popular CL56, the amd64 system is the Uniwill listed in my sig. the 1100 system, cant think of the odm.

That was my leaning at first. But, for $160 more I can get the 17" zd7000 w/ the same features except has 128mb nvidia 5700, not sure which card is better between this one and the 9600.

Also, if I'm going to get a desktop processor anyway, I'd sort of prefer the A64 to the P4 due to price and performance is a little better, but can't find any with good video in this price range.

Any other suggestions from other manufacturers for an A-64 notebook w/ good video?

with 32bit applications, the slight performance difference between the a64 and P4 won't be noticeable.
seems to me that you should be looking at abspc's mayhem G3 w/ and athlo64 as well as 128mb 9700 gpu.

Thanks. I'll check those out. As far as my A64 preference, my thinking is that for the same money you get better performance. I'm going to stick with the P4 3.0 or A64 3400 as they seem to be about the same price range while the a64 performs better than the 3.0.

I would go for #2 as well, but just incase you're still looking at other options, maybe this will be of some interest to you..

thanks.
I am definitely still searching. I checked out the mwave but I am really wanting 15.4" SXGA minimum, prefer UXGA & can't upgrade that processor to the 3400 on the mwave.

That 3000Z is perfect except for the video card.

That one is out of my range, $1400 is my hard limit. It is hard to find an A64 3400 w/ a good video for less than $1400.

6811 has a 3400 and a 9600 but it is $1600 after rebates if you want to check it out its at Bestbuy.com
