Sager's Answer to the Compal, countdown thread - Page 5

I'm waiting anxiously as well. I check the forums all day for an update
post #82 of 714
Any news yet???.... can't wait to be mobile and producing work on the go again. It's been a while since I had a notebook, my productivity was much higher when I carried my work around everywhere. Come on Sager!

You know, Eurocom already has this notebook, and they are selling them now, but they say they will be shipped in 3 weeks. Why would Eurcom have it already and not Sager? Perhaps Sager will have them just as soon, but won't announce it until it's actually available for shipping? Also, per Eurocom rep, Eurcom has NO return policy, but they say they may set one for me as a special case. I'm not comfortable with that, though. I think I'll just wait. After 2 no hassle returns to Sager/PCTorque, I'd rather give them my business if it's just going to be for another Clevo based notebook.

Did you notice that with the 12 cell battery option, this notebook touts a 6 hour run time? That's a hell of an accomplishment for a cpu that rates comparable to a P IV 3.2 ghz (non-exreme edition).

I checked earlier this morning (and then just now), and Eurocom doesn't have the M37EW for sale anywhere on their site. I understand they're a fairly reputable company, but man, they have some seriously shady practices when it comes to advertising available models. Didn't they do the exact same thing with the Clevo 470K?
That is weird. What do they do, alternate days with it on and off? I conigured a system yesterday and used their "email quote" option. A sales person conacted me back pretty quickly (quicker than responses I've gotten with PCTorque), and he's been answering my questions. If they have the same response time to existing customers as they do to potential customers, that would be great. But so many companies do not. Anyway they sent me an order form in the form of an email attachment. But I've decided not to purchase from them, based on comparison of existing notebooks, PCTorque or Sager direct will be significantly cheaper, and I hope it will become available from them at the same time it is actually available from Eurocrime. So perhaps they have already gotten all the orders they think they can fill. Anybody want my slot for the M37EW?

Just got back from Best Buy. Can you say "fat, slow and ugly?". I know I can.

I went back and reviewed the Sony A series again. I made Micro Center take it out of it's cage so I could feel it's weight and and really get a feel for it's size. I just can't quite decide. 17inch it's great screen but more bulk (don't really care about weight) or 15.4inch with it's good size and supposedly 6 hour battery life (and 64 more mega bytes of vram). hmmm, someone care to talk me out of the Slimy, I mean Sony.

I always felt that that the high-end Sony's were overpriced chique lappies for supermodels and NBA players. not really for gamers, but if it has the 9700 I'd still consider it.

hmm, I don't think I'd pass for either one of those, I do play a pretty mean ping-pong game, though.

You know, they want $1200 extra for the P M 2.0 over the base 1.4 P M Celeron. If I get it, I'm going to get the base model and upgrade it myself.

Ahh when is it coming out? ... I need a lappy for my college classes and my 4780 is a bit too heavy, hot, and not to mention the 1 hr battery life.

So bascially I'm thinking of replacing it with this sager. So when's it out guys? Next month? Hopefully its not 5 months which is how long I waited for the 4780 to come out late Nov '03.

How about we switch the Mobility 9700 for a Mobility 9800. Sounds good to me. I wish Sager would do that because the 9700 is the bottleneck of this system, and the piece that is already obsolete. I was hoping for one of these, but if the 9800 will have 8 Pipes I might hold off, depending on when/what will be released with it.
the best advice is still to wait as long as possible before buying. hopefully something with a 9800 or x600 will be out before summer's over for those of you who haven't picked one yet.

I am going through the same issue. I like the sexy appeal of the Sony but that 64 vram bites. If it had the 128 in it, and less of a price tag, then it would be done. I like the screen and the tv-tuner. But I hate the Sony price. Come on Sager!

Ditto on Sony plug!

I had no idea that the 17" model was based on the second-generation Pentium M processors. This has totally made me rethink the purchase in some regards. The screen is lovely, I like the dock, but I too have a problem with not offering more VRAM, higher hard-drive speed capacities (and the ability to easily upgrade it), and the memory slots awkward upgrade (one under the system and the other under the keyboard).

Yet in still, I still really like the system! The choice never gets easier!

will this lappy be upgradable in the vid card section?

Is it really not easy to upgrade these things? I was planning on upgrading everything including processor. (That is, if I actually end up buying one.)
Personally, I'm holding out until the middle of August - it's just too important to get one in time for school to start.

I'm upset, because of all the new stuff coming out, but maybe I will sell it midway through the year to upgrade, perhaps...
Update: I spoke with a Sony rep online and learned that the RAM is user replaceable without warranty issues. However, HDD has to be taken to an authorized dealer. They will check the compatibility of the drive and perform the upgrade. And the VRAM at the moment will remain at the 64MB; but he left it very open ended-without definitely confirming or denying any future upgrades of VRAM via updated models from Sony.
That's good to hear about the upgrades. I usually keep my old stuff (original memory and harddrive) and I plan to just swap them back if I ever have to send the notebook in for repair. Taking a notebook to a repair center to upgrade the harddrive is out of the question. It would take me longer to put the notebook in my car, much less drive over there, than it would to just replace the harddrive. That's the thing I don't like about Sony, they're not big on users knowing what they're doing. Not a chance in hell they'd just send me a replacement for a bad part like Dell does.
