Thanks for the congrats - he does really deserve this (going to Yale). Kid is smart and has worked hard his whole life at school, that's why I want him to make a smart decision when it comes to a new computer, not to mention the fact that it's a large purchase for him.

Does anyone know (this shows how computer challenged I am) that when you order the wireless network option, does this come with the thing they call a LAN, or is it something you have to order elsewhere/seperately?

Also, for those ordering the extended warranty - how many extra years did you purchase? I was thinking to make it a total of 4 years, at least to get him thru undergrad years.

THANKS AGAIN & AGAIN!

The wireless bit is the only separate thing regarding the LAN. Without the wireless option, one can still connect to the internet- you just have to be connected with an ethernet cable. If you purchase the wireless option, then you can connect w/o the ethernet cable (but the port will still be available if he were to be in an area where there is no wireless service). I would definitely purchase the wireless option. I would imagine a school like Yale would have wireless areas that he could connect to and he would also be able to use it in airports or in various areas while travelling.

As for the extended warranty, I personally chose the maximum amount allowed in the options menu from PC Torque when I purchased mine. One never knows what will happen in 3+ years.

What's the difference between the two options:

Internal 802.11g TURBO (108Mbps) wireless

OR

Internal -g TURBO (108Mbps) Wireless+Router

So, not quite understanding, do either of these items include this LAN thing, or do you have to purchase and install it seperately?

I don't think he'll need a router...that's a separate box that sits on a wired LAN and provides a gateway for wireless devices (technically, a WAP - Wireless Access Point - with some smarts). Most people that buy routers have 2 or more computers they want to connect together. And colleges already provide the infrastructure...
Heh Deb, without all the tech talk. All he needs is the wireless..not the router. Most colleges now have wi-fi..(wireless internet accessed by the wireless card option you can purchase enternally for the 5690) if not the college will have places to hook up to their lan and that part..(Where he would hook in a dsl/cable cord to the colleges lan) or port is already built in to the 5690. Difinately get the wireless... just remember, its a great powerful machine, but it sucks for battery life so you might want to pick up a second battery.

To follow-up: I think the 2nd battery should be a requisite rather than an option. I have the 5680 (slightly older model than the 5690) and run w/ the 2-battery setup.

I noticed someone said not to buy the laptop without the os. I already have xp pro and don't want to pay more for home just to get rid of it. Will they not test out the laptop as thoroughly if I order no os?

Some people say that, but it was not my experience. I bought my 8890 around last Thanksgiving without an OS and had no problems at all. I installed my copy of XP Pro and the drivers that Sager supplied on CD (printed instruction included) in about 1 hour. It runs real good.

It isn't that hard to install everything yourself and then you know how to get back to square one if you really need to.

The one exception to this is if you are not fimular with loading Windows and don't want to learn on a brand new machine, which is the case for the guy that started this thread.

If you buy the OS I would suggest asking about XP Pro rather than Home.

Personally I think the 5690 is a very good choice. If I were back in Engineering School again that is what I would take with me.

Last but not least PCTorque is the place to buy from they are truly service oriented.

will xp auto detect that it's installed on a laptop and install power monitor type utilitiesm(ie battery life remaining displayed in taskbar)? or do you have to do that manually

Not sure but

After I finished installing XP Pro and the drivers that came with the lappy I have all of that. I think the battery monitoring icon comes from XP sensing that it is a lappy.
