im pretty sure the dothan uses intel's speedstep technology which basically drops the cpu speed during periods of inactivity or less intensive use. im not sure how to use speedstep manually and limit the cpu speed.
otherwise stick with the old school tricks - dont access the hd much (if you have a gig of ram or more, you should turn off the hd paging file... speeds up performance and lowers hd access), dont use the cd drive if possible, turn down the brightness and turn down the volume.

Set the power setting to laptop/portable instead of always on.

ummm...stop lying to him u guys!

Yes, you need an external program for this. But in order for the program to apear you need to build a bonfire and dance around and chant voodoo like obscenities to the spirits so that they can help you.
Then if they are pleased they will guide to a copy of windows xp for dummies. (not you, the book).

It's built into the BIOS

Additionally, you can use Windows to disable components you're not using at tthe moment

If you're using Windows XP, set your power scheme to "Portable/Laptop" by going to your Desktop Properties (right click desktop, click Properties) -> Screen Saver tab -> "Power..." button -> Power Schemes tab -> Power Scheme drop-down menu.

If you're running Windows 2000, you need to install the Speed Step applet that is included on your CL56 driver CD. If it's not on your CD, download it at www.chemusa.com/2056_05

What is a HD paging file? How do I turn it off?
a paging file is reserved hard drive space for the computer to use like ram. its also known as 'virtual memory'. the computer uses this space when your ram gets filled up, and also keeps common system files that are used every now and then but not frequently. If your ram never fills up, its a good idea to just turn off the paging file and dump everything into ram. It stops you from accessing the hd frequently which improves speed and battery life. also, if you do run out of space, it will just open up the hd paging file again, so you wont crash or anything.
A gig of ram should hold anything you throw at it. i can run halo and as many background tasks as i want and still have space to spare on a gig of ram.
