MSI Mega Book...drool - Page 4

Ohh without a doubt, they have the DTR gaming crowd by the short and curlys right now. The performance increase is more than enough to endure the "dude you got a dell" jokes.

Personally, I don't really consider the 9100/XPS a notebook. It's in a different category...I think it compares more closely to a Shuttle SFF machine with a built-in screen. It's heavy, the power brick is big and heavy and it has no battery life (less than an hour gaming).

Still the 9800 is tempting. It really depends on how mobile you need to be. You could probably carry it back and forth to work or to LANs without a problem, but I don't think it would be any good for bringing to classes, coffee shops or using on an airplane.

Also, since there's almost a month wait time anyway, you might as well wait a month to hear what other manufacturers are coming up with after Dell's exclusive deal.

i consider anything for 7 pounds not to be all that great. you have to remmeber the college student or professional has la ot of other @#*@( to carry like cell, papers, binders, etc. etc.

I would agree that over 7 pounds becomes a desktop replacement, although I lug a huge one around sometimes (that didn't sound right). For the airplane, though, it's the MSI for me. Not superlight, but hardly heavy. Very full-featured and pretty thin. I'd never dream of lugging the Dell XPS or 9100 around in a backpack.

The option has now come up to configure the MSI 510C with following

2ghz Dothan
1gig ram
R9700 128MB
60GB HD (@7200rpm)
1 year free pick up service guarantee

Price (all tax + delivery inc): Yen: 140,000 / USD 2150 (approx using XE.com)

At the moment I am thinking either dell inspiron 9100 P4 3.2 Ghz R9800 256MB or the above MSI...

would the 2ghz Dothan be overkill?

Would there be much difference between the Dothan 1.8 and the 2.0 Ghz to justify the jump in price?

I think you meant 240,000 Yen.

Anyway, I personally don't think it's worth the price increase for a marginal increase in framerates. The 2.0GHz is currently the premium Dothan chip and is accordingly (over-)priced. The 9700 is the main limiting factor on P-M machines as far as gaming, so a faster CPU won't give you much of a boost.

Yes that would be 240.00 yen..sorry day dreaming when I wrote that.

Don't worry about the 1.8-2.0 jump, it's much too expensive for the processing power increase. Stick with the 1.8.

Hey guys,

I've been having a little look around at some stores in Australia, and i'm really getting to like this MSI notebook, looking to buy one (a notebook, not specifically this one) at the end of this year. I've found a few places offering a 2.0 Gig Dotham version, but the only thing that really concerns me is the 64MB 9600.

That said, would anyone have any rough idea when the 128MB 9700 config version might be comming to Oz? Or where (if at all) it is available?

Thanx

Anywhere to get this with the 9700 in the US?
not yet, mawst95. I'm still bugging MSI for that. They won't even say when or if it's coming.
I emailed MSI US when we first started discussing this model and I haven't heard anything back from them.
I'm pretty sure there is one US rep, she's rather inundated I'm guessing. The information I got was the same as CoffeeShark got...basicly no ETA on the MR9700 for the 510C.
Hey Unleaded and CoffeeShark, is it pretty much the same answer for the white pearl finish? Or are those available anywhere in the US?
fraid not.
