Mobile Athlon 64 QUestions...

So was browsing through newegg.com and saw Mobile Athlon 64's....
Decently priced compared to thier desktop counter parts...
I just built an AMD64 System, but my question is,

Would a Mobile Athlon64 Chip work in a Desktop board? and what would the benifits of this be?

Thanks.

Good question, I am wondering the same!

the advantages would be lower wattage, which would save on the electricty bill and less need for fans so it would be quieter. but i don't know if its possible.

I knwo it is possible, and I think there are other advantages... That really wouldnt be one as the usage of electricity wouldnt really help with the electric bill lol.

Right now I've got a coolermaster case, about 5 fans + a Gefroce 6800 (stock cooling) and AMD Stock HSF I've got virtually silent....
I was curious about the OC potential a mobile chip may have VS, a desktop chip, like the mobile athlons...

Anyone know?

they're clocked at a much lower voltage.. this gives you more headroom when overclocking.. also mobile chips are hand picked from the batch of amd64's so you're guaranteed a great piece of silicon when you buy it where as the desktop chips were the bottom of the barrel but still good enough to clock at non-mobile voltages. also because of the fact mobile chips aren't set at factory default settings for the cpu (lower voltage etc) - they're unlocked (another bonus for overclocking). i know it's possible to use athlon xp mobile chips in motherboards but i'm unsure about amd64. i think you'd have to get a custom HSF built for it but i'm not positive.

you dont need to unlock a a64 desktop cpu do you. i overclocked mine fine but i didnt have to.

I'm sure that they fit in desktop mobos, anyone want to verify?

Well considering that Mobile XP's will work with most Athlon boards, I would assume the Mobile A64 is the same.

yeah they will work.. question is whether the heat sink fans will fit right.. i don't think they will.
