Uses for TV Tuner in 8790...

I just recevied my 8790 several days ago and it's working like a charm(save for the enormous quantity of heat it's speeding up global warming with), but I'm a little confused about the TV Tuner. Here's my situation: I'm moving into a dorm room at college that provides Cable TV via coaxial cable. Of course, the 8790 doesn't have that - it has an S-Video and an RCA input. So, without buying some external USB TV Tuner(the 8790 is supposed to perform this function via the tuner card), how can I not only recevie the video input, but changer the channels, and in short, use my laptop as a substitute television. If this is not possible - then is "TV Tuner" a misnomer. Any help would be well--helpful! Thanks!

When I recieved my 8790 with a TV Tuner, it came with a coaxial > RCA type converter. Search to see if you have one in your bag. If you can't find it, Radio Shack probab;y has one.

That converter will do the trick and then you can use it for many things. I use mine a lot to convert old video tapes to digital. It isn't a misnomer, you can use your 8790 as a TV and you can record at the same time. That is the primary purpose for the remote control.

Since I lived in a dorm room, I can offer some very enticing suggestions:

1) You don't have much space in a dorm room. Save space both in your car and in the room and forego bringing your TV. Run everything though the 8790.

2) Roommates can talk of telephones louder than you play your TV. Hook coax up to the 8790 and a pair of headphones.

3) Your roommate may go to sleep before you do. You may not wish to wake him or her. Therefore, the headphone idea still applies. This does not have to be just for TV; it can be for video games and a VCR.

4) Be silly in class; bring a TV antenna with you. I did this for one of my Master's classes. We were waiting for Oracle to create a new database (13 mins on mine, more than 20 on others' computers), so I got out the antenna while I was talking about what else the laptop could do. What an effective demonstration that was. Note the instructor was also idle and joined in on the TV thing as we were waiting for the database to be created.

5) At my place, my TV is gathering dust. I hook up my PS2 and VCR to my laptop because I don't want to get up and go to another room just to watch TV. I also have a very comfortable office chair in this room, so I like watching videos on this laptop. Now, if only I could get rid of that 1/4 second A/V lag...

Many uses. I would not use it for video capturing, as that A/V lag eventually gets so bad the video is more than a second off with audio. Tisk-tisk. I wonder what pro video capturers use?

Kaine, I haven't had the lag problem of which you speak. I don't know why because I wasn't aware that the problem existed. I will look into it and see if I can get mine to do it.

looking at connector...

I'm looking at the connector that came with my TV Tuner. It has male S-Video comnnector on one end (going to the tuner I presume) and on the other a S-Video female as well as a green, red, and light blue connector. If I'm not mistaken, those are for component video. Couldn't find any coaxial connectors. By the way, is there a name for the piece I'm looking for as my 'Shack guy tells me no suck piece exists? (Radio Shack...You've got questions, we've got blank stares)

That's read odd...that Shack guy didn't know what he was talkin about.

Here is a connector that is "right angled" that works: http://www.radioshack.com/product.as...5Fid=278%2D260

You should have received something like this in one of the bags - Maybe with the tuner; however, it is straight like this one: http://www.radioshack.com/product.as...5Fid=278%2D290
