D800 vs i8600 - Page 2

if you buy a d800 and then purchase the quadro card seperately and the hinge cover seperately, you will have a m60 but at a reduced price. that is the only two differences, and one is cosmetic.

oh yeah hows jeeves these days?
Jeeves is sitting in my backpack, as it has been for the past week, awaiting me to pack it so that I might take it on vacation on Thursday. But I'm leaving Tuesday (Don't ask).

As for the M60, it is worth buying just for the video card. Its essentially a Go5700, and is better for CAD-type applications. For the soon-to-be engineering major that I am, it would be extremely valuable.

Yeah, the M60's main advatages over the D800 are its Quadro workstation based graphics cards and the faster RAM (although D800 can be 'soft-modded' via BIOS flash). Elsewise there are few other advantages.

This option will totally depend on how much money you have to invest (how much is a lot???) but Voodoo have just released their 380 laptop. It is essentially a 1920x1200 15.4" 8600 with a paintjob and ATI 9700 and is the only high res widescreen 9700/Dothan combo available. A fully loaded setup is likely to set you back about US$4500 though, as well as the famed 30 day (read 60+) Voodoo delivery and build time. Sounds like the ultimate machine, but at a price.
Cheers

M60 is arguably unnecessary for the gamer. Its video card won't fare as well as the 9600PT in the 8600; its video card is a workstation card which is more suited (completely suited) for CAD work.

Thread Starter
You guys have been extremely helpful. From what it sounds like I think the i8600 will suit me the best. Light gaming, some amatuer video editing, something power and fast.

This is what it will have tell me what you think.

Intel® Pentium®M Processor 755 (2.0GHz),15.4in WSXGA+
Microsoft® Windows® XP Professional
512MB DDR SDRAM 1 Dimm
128MB DDR ATI's MOBILITY® RADEON™ 9600 PROTURBO
8x CD/DVD burner (DVD+RW/+R)
60GB Hard Drive at 7200RPM
Dell® Wireless 1450 Internal Wireless (802.11a/b/g, 54Mbps)
Dell™ TrueMobile™ 300 Bluetooth Internal Card

Anymore suggestions? Also my friend got a new gateway and it comes with a fingerprint reader for this laptop. Dell doesnt offer that right?

sounds perfect(check out the wUxga. its really now that small plus improves output tremendously, for me:i can now see stock quotes&news&derivatives quotes on the same screen!!!! too much)..

.Also glad u saved yourself some money!!!! and its good u are concentrating on the hardware and now which brand/model ...

Is the case for the D800 plastic or something else? What about the M60? People say the base and case is more sturdy on the D800 and M60 and that the I8600 feels cheap and likely to break?

Is this true. Im thinking about saving a little more money and get the D800 to get the more sturdy case if it's true that the i8600 fells cheap b/c of the plastc.

What exactly is an advantage of the i8600 over the d800 (except for price). Thanks for the help

besides 333MHz memory, absolutely nothing. D800 has more USB ports, legacy ports, infrared, trackstick, smartcard reader, etc.

errr check the first page of this thread, we pretty much stated all the differances between the 8600 and d800 before i sidetracked into the m60.

however in summery

8600 - best bang for buck widescreen laptop.
D800 - nice bang for buck widescreen laptop with alot of extra goodies.

I have a 8600 and while i agree that the build quality won't stand up to an IBM, its still pretty good and won't turn to dust in your hands

Don't forget that for gaming the i8600 has the better graphics choice...

Unless you want to use OpenGL...

In which case you would could think about going M60 -- especially if money is no issue.
i've got a question on the d800, does it have a powered usb 2.0 port?
Yes.
As Ofelas said, yes it does. One powered port on the side, next to Media bay, and two 'unpowered' regular ports on the back.
